Is it just us, or does half term seem to come round quicker every time? With the last school holidays before the summer, May is the perfect time to get out and about as a family - but what to do this half term?

Get set for all sorts of fun as we’ve been on the hunt for the best of the best: think magic, maypoles and even some maths... all wrapped up in fun family events and activities to enjoy at the end of the month. So what are you waiting for? Here’s our guide to some of the best half term activities and things to do from across the country - so you can find the events near you.

When is the next half term?

  • May half term is coming up next - it falls from Monday 28th May - Friday 1st June 2018, but individual schools may get an extra day (lucky them!)
  • After that, the only half term left in 2018 is the October half term and the dates really vary from region to region - check out our UK school holidays post to find out more

Our top 10 half term activities, event & things to do

  1. The Land of Adventure at Wild Place Project, Bristol

    26th May - 3rd June

Experience Wild Place Project like never before, as you embark on a Really Wild Quest through the Land of Adventure! With loads of challenges to tackle, a fairy door trail and a Magic Wishing Tree to make a wish upon, it’s a magical half term adventure for the whole family. Plus, with fancy dress days too, you won’t want to miss it!

  2. Love Your Zoo Week, UK wide

    25th May - 2nd June

This annual event always coincides with May half term, as BIAZA members help to promote the work they do across conservation, education and research at some of the UK’s best zoos and aquariums. Expect to find lots of fun events and activities taking place at some of your favourites, including Birdworld, Twycross Zoo and Drayton Manor.

  3. Enchanted Wood Trail at Thorp Perrow, Bedale, North Yorkshire

    26th May - 3rd June

Follow the trail and uncover magic and mystery, with the Enchanted Wood Trail at Thorp Perrow. This half term, kids are encouraged to dress up as fairies and elves to complete the trail through the enchanted wood, seeing if they can spot fairy doors along the way. The trail sheet is an additional £1 per person.

  4. Unicorn Festival at Cannon Hall Farm, Barnsley, South Yorkshire

    26th May - 3rd June

Half term activities don’t come with much more sparkle than the Unicorn Festival at Cannon Hall Farm. For the very first time, kids can complete challenges to help Sparkle rediscover her magic, enjoy the Sweetie Sparkle show and meet the magical unicorn in person, all in addition to enjoy the usual antics on the farm. With a huge soft play centre, farm talks and a tractor trailer ride too, there’s plenty for an action packed day out.

  5. Giraffe Week at West Midland Safari Park, Bewdley, West Midlands

    26th May - 3rd June

We’re sticking our necks out (see what we did there?!) and saying that this is one of our favourite May half term events, as Giraffe Week comes to West Midland Safari Park. Celebrating the magnificent creatures, as well as raising funds for their conservation at the same time, kids will love the chance to become a Giraffe Ranger on the Discovery Trail, create some fun themed crafts and catch a Giraffe Talk at the Encounter Stage. Fun for all the family, and for a great cause too - sounds like a winning combination to us!

Each day there’s a new character to meet, with mini-shows to enjoy as part of the fun too. Some of the names include Basil Brush, Octonauts and Fireman Sam, making it a great family day out in Devon!

Bursting with activities based on science, technology, engineering and maths (yep, that’s STEM!), kids can get their brain cells ticking and learn how to generate their own electricity amongst some other experiments too. The event is free, but normal admission into the venue applies.

See if you can spot the T-Rex and Velociraptor walking around the farm, and be sure to stop them for a photo if you’re brave enough… plus join the dinosaur trainer for some exciting dino shows, including the chance to meet a baby dinosaur. A must-visit for any dinosaur fans, this half term event is also the perfect excuse to explore the farm too.
