Our Arrival & First Impressions
We visited Whipsnade Zoo to celebrate Robert’s birthday, and it made a wonderful first impression from the moment we arrived. With beautiful surroundings, plenty of space to explore, and exciting animal encounters around every corner, it felt like the perfect place to spend a special day together as a family.
Activities Breakdown
One of the absolute highlights of our visit was seeing the incredible 4-day-old baby elephant. It was such a special moment and something we’ll remember for a long time. Watching the little one stay close to its mum and explore its surroundings was truly heartwarming, and we felt very lucky to visit so soon after its arrival.
Throughout the day, we enjoyed exploring the different animal habitats and seeing a wide variety of species, from playful penguins and curious monkeys to majestic lions and rhinos. The zoo is incredibly spacious, which gives the animals plenty of room and creates a more natural environment, but it does mean there’s a lot of walking involved. Comfortable footwear is definitely a must!
The penguins were our first stop and quickly became a family favourite. We spent quite a while watching them swim and interact with each other. We also enjoyed the train ride, which offered a different perspective of the zoo and gave our legs a little rest.
The children’s play areas were a great addition and gave the kids a chance to burn off some energy between animal encounters. There were plenty of picnic spots and facilities around the zoo, making it easy to take breaks throughout the day.
The only downside for us was the sheer size of the zoo. While it’s fantastic to have so much to explore, it can feel quite tiring, especially with younger children. Some of the animals were also resting or further away in their enclosures, which is completely understandable but meant we didn’t get the best view of every animal.
Overall, the positives far outweighed any negatives. Seeing the baby elephant alone made the visit worthwhile, and combined with the variety of animals, family-friendly facilities and beautiful surroundings, it was a fantastic day out and a wonderful way to celebrate Robert’s birthday.

A Very Special Arrival 🐘
Without a doubt, one of the most memorable moments of our day was meeting Whipsnade Zoo’s adorable 4-day-old baby elephant. Watching the tiny calf sticking close to its mum, taking wobbly steps and exploring its new surroundings was incredibly special. There was a real buzz around the enclosure, and it felt like such a privilege to witness this precious milestone so soon after its birth. A truly unforgettable highlight of our visit!

Beware: Rhino Snoring!
Rhinos have always been Rob’s favourite animal, so visiting their enclosure was a must during our day at Whipsnade Zoo. Seeing these incredible creatures up close was a real highlight for him, but what made the experience even more memorable was discovering that one of them was fast asleep and snoring loudly! Hearing a rhino snore wasn’t something we expected, and it quickly became one of the funniest moments of our visit. It definitely gave us all a laugh and made Rob’s favourite animal even more memorable.

Up Close With The Lemurs!
The lemur enclosure was one of our favourite experiences of the day. The kids loved being able to get so close to these curious and playful animals, making it feel like a truly immersive encounter. Capturing a photo with a lemur nearby was such a special moment and one we’ll look back on with fond memories. It was a fantastic opportunity to observe these amazing creatures up close and learn more about them in a natural and engaging environment.

Views upon Views!
One of my favourite photos from the day is this one of all three children looking out across the stunning Whipsnade Downs. The scenery was absolutely breathtaking, with rolling countryside stretching as far as the eye could see. It was a lovely reminder that Whipsnade Zoo isn’t just about the animals - it’s also set in one of the most beautiful locations, offering plenty of moments to pause, take in the view and appreciate the surroundings.
Food & Drink
There were plenty of food and drink options available throughout the zoo, with a good variety of meals, snacks and refreshments on offer. However, as a family of five, we did find the prices quite expensive, and the cost of lunch and drinks soon added up. While it was convenient to have so many choices available, we’ll definitely plan ahead for future visits and take a packed lunch to help keep costs down. Thankfully, there are plenty of picnic areas around the zoo, making it easy for families to bring their own food and enjoy a break in the beautiful surroundings.
Money-Saving Tip
If you’re visiting Whipsnade Zoo as a family, I’d definitely recommend bringing a packed lunch and plenty of drinks. While there are lots of food outlets available, the cost can add up quickly. Our lunch for five came to just under £49, so packing your own food could save a significant amount of money. With plenty of picnic benches and green spaces around the zoo, it’s easy to stop for lunch and enjoy the beautiful surroundings while keeping your day out a little more budget-friendly.

Could Be Better
The zoo is huge, which is great for the animals but can mean a lot of walking, especially with younger children.- Food and drink prices were quite expensive. We spent just under £49 on 2 paninis, 3 children’s sandwiches, 4 packets of crisps and 2 cans of pop.
- Depending on the time of day, some animals may be resting or further away in their enclosures, making them harder to spot.
- Signage is generally good, but we found ourselves checking the map regularly to make sure we weren’t missing anything.
- The zoo’s hilly terrain may be challenging for some visitors, especially in warm weather or when pushing a buggy.
Overall Verdict & Ratings
We were really impressed with the cleanliness and overall upkeep of Whipsnade Zoo. Throughout our visit, the pathways, picnic areas, toilets and animal viewing areas were clean and well maintained. We also felt very safe walking around the zoo, with clear pathways, secure enclosures and plenty of staff visible throughout the grounds. As a family with children, it was reassuring to see how well organised everything was, allowing us to relax and enjoy our day with confidence.
In addition to the animal exhibits, there were a few extra attractions around the zoo for families to enjoy. We spotted a carousel which looked popular with younger children, although if I remember correctly it was around £4 per person, which I did think was a little expensive on top of the admission cost. As a family of five, these extras can quickly add up. That said, there were also play areas and plenty of opportunities for children to explore, helping to make the day enjoyable beyond the animal encounters.

Our lunch came to just under £49 for 2 paninis, 3 small children’s sandwiches, 4 packets of crisps and 2 cans of pop. Bottled water also felt expensive, especially on a warm day when staying hydrated is essential. We were also surprised to see ice creams priced at £3.90 for a single scoop. As a family of five, these costs can add up very quickly, so we’d definitely recommend bringing a packed lunch and refillable water bottles if you’re looking to keep the day a little more budget-friendly.
Despite visiting during a busy period, we were pleasantly surprised by how well Whipsnade Zoo handled the number of visitors. Thanks to the zoo’s huge size, crowds felt spread out and we rarely felt cramped while exploring. We experienced very little queueing throughout the day, with plenty of space around the animal enclosures and walkways. The busiest areas tended to be around the food outlets and popular attractions, but overall the zoo never felt overcrowded, which made for a much more relaxed and enjoyable family day out.
Whipsnade Zoo was full of moments that brought smiles to all of our faces. From watching the playful penguins and getting up close to the lemurs, to spotting the maras roaming freely around the zoo, there was always something exciting around the next corner. Of course, the biggest highlight was seeing the adorable 4-day-old baby elephant, which felt incredibly special. Even hearing a rhino snoring away made us laugh! It was a day packed with fun, surprises and memorable family moments that we’ll be talking about for a long time.
This was probably the area I struggled with most during our visit. Thankfully, we were able to take advantage of Whipsnade Zoo’s Universal Credit tickets, which were an absolute lifesaver for our family and made the trip possible. Eligible families can access heavily discounted tickets compared to standard admission prices, which can exceed £30 per adult and £20 per child when booked online. As amazing as our day was, I can’t help but feel that a regular family of five could be looking at a very expensive day out. Once you factor in admission, £30 parking, food and drinks, ice creams and optional extras such as the carousel, the costs can quickly add up. We thoroughly enjoyed our visit and made some wonderful memories, but without the discounted tickets, the overall cost would have been much harder to justify. For families who are eligible, I’d highly recommend checking out the Universal Credit ticket scheme before booking
The Final Verdict:
Overall, we had a genuinely wonderful day at Whipsnade Zoo and made some fantastic family memories. The standout moments for us were seeing the 4-day-old baby elephant, watching the penguins, getting up close to the lemurs, spotting the maras roaming freely, and, of course, hearing the rhino snoring away! The zoo itself is beautifully maintained, set within stunning countryside, and it’s clear that animal welfare is a top priority. Would I recommend it to friends and family? Absolutely. The variety of animals, beautiful surroundings and unique experiences make it a brilliant day out for all ages. Would we visit again? Yes, but we’d definitely plan differently. We’d bring a packed lunch, refillable water bottles and make a full day of it to get the most value from the experience. My only real hesitation is the cost. Without the discounted Universal Credit tickets, I do think many families would find it difficult to justify the overall expense once admission, parking, food and extras are added up. That said, despite my concerns about value for money, the memories we made and the experiences we had were priceless. For us, the positives far outweighed the negatives, and it’s a day we’ll be talking about for a long time to come.
