Short breaks and weekend breaks in the UK
Short breaks are the second-largest travel decision UK families make each year, sitting between big overseas holidays and paid days out. This hub covers the shapes that work with kids, from city breaks and hot-tub lodges to Scotland and Christmas weekends.
The shapes that actually work with kids
A short break with children is a different animal from an adults-only weekend away. You need arrival to be forgiving after a long drive, self-contained space for evenings once children are in bed, and something on the ground within a fifteen-minute range for the middle day. Almost every good family short break in the UK fits one of six patterns: city with kids, cottage or lodge with a hot tub, coast, Scotland, theme-park adjacent, or the cheap-and-cheerful midweek stay.
Where to go
- Cities that suit kids: York, Edinburgh, Bath, Chester and Cardiff carry the highest hit rate. Central hotels, walkable centres, and enough happening that teens don't switch off. See the city breaks guide.
- Hot tub lodges: The strongest family short-break format of the last five years. Enclosed decking, private tub, and no need to leave for the entire stay. Hot tub breaks guide.
- Scotland: The Lochs, Cairngorms and Fife suit families in a way the Highlands proper only reward on longer trips. Scotland short breaks.
- Cheap and last-minute: Two and three-night deals under £100 a night still exist if you look off-peak and mid-week. Cheap and last-minute breaks.
- Christmas: A short break over the Christmas holidays is a distinct category with its own price behaviour. Christmas breaks guide.
Rough costs
A two-night midweek hot-tub lodge for four lands £280 to £460 off-peak and £600 to £900 during school holidays. A three-night central city hotel for the same family sits £450 to £900 depending on city. Bank-holiday weekends on either shape carry an unavoidable premium.
When to book
School-holiday weekends and any Bank Holiday need booking six months out for the best cottage or lodge stock. Off-peak midweek can be booked three weeks out with no penalty and often a small last-minute discount. Christmas week bookings close early in autumn.
Family holidays in the UK, more broadly
If you're comparing a short break against a full week, our staycations and short breaks feature covers full-week UK stays. And for the biggest overseas alternative, our free child places round-up shows where packages beat a UK week outright.
