Short breaks in Scotland with kids
A short break in Scotland with children is a specific shape. The Highlands proper reward a week, not a weekend, so the best family bases sit in the belt where scenery, activity and a manageable drive from home all meet.
Where to base for a first Scottish weekend
The Trossachs and Loch Lomond
Under an hour from Glasgow, an hour and a half from Edinburgh. Aberfoyle and Callander are the two friendliest bases, both with lodge and cabin stock, boat trips on Loch Katrine, and easy woodland walks that suit under-tens. The strongest first-Scotland base for families driving from central England.
The Cairngorms
Aviemore in winter for the funicular, and in shoulder seasons for the mountain-biking, sled-dog centres and reindeer walks. Long drive from anywhere south of Manchester, so lean towards three nights minimum. Family-friendly hotels and lodges in the resort itself.
Fife and East Neuk
Under-appreciated. St Andrews, Anstruther, Pittenweem and a string of sandy beaches you can drive between in the same afternoon. Best for primary-age children and quieter than the West Coast bases in July and August.
What to skip on a short break
Skye, the Outer Hebrides and the North Coast 500 are all magnificent, and none of them work as a weekend. The driving eats the trip. Save them for a week's holiday.
Ages and what suits them
Under-fives: the Trossachs and Fife, where the walks are short and the beaches shallow. Five to eleven: Cairngorms in shoulder season, or the Trossachs year round. Twelve and up: Edinburgh as the base, and day trips out to the Falkirk Wheel and Kelpies, or a night up in Aviemore for winter sports.
Rough costs
Family of four, three nights in a Trossachs lodge or cabin, off-peak: £360 to £520. Same family, three-night Aviemore hotel with breakfast: £520 to £850. Peak summer weeks add roughly 30 per cent.
When to book
Aviemore hotels for the February half term sell out by October. Trossachs lodges for the May Bank Holiday go by January. Off-peak midweek in either can be booked three weeks out.
Extend the trip
