Formats that work at Christmas

Three-night 24-26 December hotel packages

Traditional Christmas-house hotel breaks include the meals, entertainment and enough of a schedule that adults don't have to plan Christmas Day. Prices are premium and headline totals of £1,600 to £2,800 for a family of four are standard. Book by mid-November.

Self-catering cottage or lodge

The best-value shape, and the one that suits under-tens best. Cook your own dinner, no dress code, and pace the day around the children. Christmas-week cottages for four run £900 to £1,600. Sell out early October.

Center Parcs Christmas breaks

A category of its own. Books 12 months out. Christmas week Center Parcs for four lands £2,200 to £3,400, and it repeatedly sells its Christmas allocation within days of release.

Christmas market weekends

Bath, Manchester, Edinburgh and York run the strongest UK markets. Turn them into a two-night family break with a central hotel and one museum day, and they hold up. Under-fives will find the crowds hard work; pair with a quiet morning at a soft-play or gallery either side.

When to book

Center Parcs Christmas: release day, 12 months ahead. Christmas-week cottages: by early October. Christmas hotel packages: mid-November at the very latest. Anything unbooked into early December is either premium-priced or geographically inconvenient.

What to avoid

Any package where Christmas Day dinner is the reason to go and the children are under six. Christmas Day dinner is a two-hour event at these places, and a two-hour dinner with a four-year-old is not a break. A self-catering cottage where dinner is your own timetable serves the same family far better.
