Gruffalo Trail Near You 2026: Find Your Nearest Family Adventure
If you go down to the woods today… you’ll be in for a right old treat! Whether you’re in Cheshire, Kent, Cumbria or County Durham, there’s a good chance a Gruffalo trail is closer than you think.
Inspired by Julia Donaldson’s much-loved storybook, Gruffalo trails are free woodland walks featuring hand-crafted sculptures of Mouse, Fox, Owl, Snake, the Gruffalo and more, set against the backdrop of some of the UK’s most beautiful forests. Most are run by Forestry England and are open year-round.
TL;DR: The Gruffalo trail is free to walk at most locations. You’ll usually pay for parking only. There are trails across England from Devon to Northumberland, with popular spots including Cannock Chase, Delamere, Alice Holt, Bedgebury and Dalby Forest. Always check the official site before you travel as hours and prices can vary.
How does a Gruffalo trail work?
Each trail follows the story of Mouse venturing into the deep dark wood, with sculptures of the characters from the book hidden along the route. Kids follow orienteering-style maps or trail signs to discover each one, turning a woodland walk into a proper adventure.
The trail itself is almost always free. What you may need to budget for:
- Parking (charges vary by site and time of day)
- Optional activity packs or maps (usually around £1.50 from the visitor centre)
- On-site extras such as bike hire, play areas, café stops or Go Ape sessions
The trails are buggy-friendly at most locations and take roughly an hour to complete, though many families make a full day of it by combining the walk with a picnic, a play area visit or one of the many other activities on offer at each forest.

Tips for planning your Gruffalo trail visit
A bit of prep goes a long way. Here’s what we’d recommend before you set off:
- Arrive early, especially at popular spots like Bedgebury and Alice Holt on weekends. Early bird parking is often significantly cheaper too
- Double-check the postcode before you leave – a couple of locations are easy to mis-enter into sat nav
- Pack wellies or sturdy shoes if there’s been any rain recently
- Bring snacks and drinks, particularly at larger forest sites where the café can get busy
- Check buggy accessibility if you’re bringing younger children – most sites are pram-friendly, but it’s worth confirming
- Look up current parking prices on the official site before you go, as charges can change seasonally
Good to know: Most Forestry England sites accept card payments at parking machines, but signal can be patchy in remote locations. Download a map before you leave!
