What Is the Gruffalo Trail?

Inspired by Julia Donaldson’s beloved storybook, the Gruffalo Trail brings the characters of the deep dark wood to life in real woodlands across the UK. It’s a collaboration between Forestry England and the publishers of the book, with hand-crafted wooden sculptures and interactive activity boards hidden amongst the trees.

There are actually a few different types of trail to look out for:

  • Gruffalo Sculpture Trail – Large wooden carvings of Mouse, Fox, Owl, Snake, Squirrel and the Gruffalo himself, scattered through the forest for kids to hunt down.
  • Gruffalo Spotters Trail – A self-guided orienteering-style trail using a map to find smaller Gruffalo markers hidden in the woods. Activity packs cost around £1.50.
  • Gruffalo Party Trail – The newest version, launched to celebrate the Gruffalo’s 25th birthday! An interactive trail where kids search for missing party items. Activity packs cost £4 and include a party headband, stickers, colouring bag and a keepsake Gruffalo patch.

The best bit? The trails themselves are completely free to walk. You only pay for parking (at most sites) and the optional activity packs.

The trails are open every day in line with each forest’s opening hours, and most are suitable for buggies. Allow around one hour to complete a trail, though little legs (and excited ones!) may take longer!

Tips for Visiting a Gruffalo Trail in the South East

A little bit of planning goes a long way to making your Gruffalo Trail visit truly magical! Here are our top tips:

Plan Around Parking

Most Forestry England sites charge for parking, and at popular spots like Bedgebury and Alice Holt, costs can add up on a busy weekend. Go early! The early bird parking rate at Bedgebury (8am-11am) is just £3.50, compared to £13 for peak all-day parking. Alice Holt’s one-hour rate is £3 if you’re just popping in for a quick trail.

Bring the Right Kit

  • Wellies or sturdy walking shoes are essential, especially after rain
  • Pack snacks and a picnic, as café queues can be long at peak times
  • Bring a small backpack for the kids to carry their activity pack and any finds
  • Download the Forestry England app before you go for trail maps

Timing Your Visit

  • School holidays are the busiest times, particularly at Bedgebury and Alice Holt. Weekday visits during term time are much quieter.
  • The trails run all year round, so autumn and winter visits can be absolutely magical with fewer crowds and beautiful seasonal colours.
  • Spring and summer are perfect for combining the trail with a picnic and a play area session.

Make a Full Day of It

Don’t just do the trail and leave! All of these sites have brilliant extras on offer:

  • Bedgebury: Go Ape, cycling, the Plant Hunter Play Area
  • Jeskyns: Room on the Broom trail, fairy gardens, dog walks
  • Alice Holt: Go Ape, Timberline Play Trail, Lodge Pond
