We all like a little bit of Netflix and chill, right? But…when the kids are in bed, dinners have been eaten and the house is all clean! Once that’s done, it’s time for the parents to relax and unwind, and there’s nothing better than grabbing some popcorn, cosy blankets and whacking on the next biggest show!
Will it be a drama like The Crown? SCI-FI like Altered Carbon? Survival/horror like Squid Game (or just a South Korean show) and well, there are plenty of series on Netflix and Netflix original films too! You could sit and watch for days (but we do recommend some breaks!)
10 Netflix Show Recommendations for Parents (adults, that means you!)
Stay Close
Harlan Coben’s latest drama mini-series is based on the book. A must-watch for those who love to sit on the edge of their seats and question everything about any character. Following three characters and how their lives interlock with each other after the disappearance of a young man.
After this binge, you should try out Safe and The Stranger too! Both mini-series adapted from Coben’s books are on Netflix for your next fix.
Maid
A sorrowful drama with hints of comedy, tells the story of a young woman who has recently left an abusive relationship with her daughter. She now juggles a low paying, hard-working job as a maid, trying to find daycare for her daughter and dealing with the aftermath of her abusive relationship.
Grab your tissues, because it is a tearjerker!
Money Heist
This is just one of the best international shows Netflix has to offer. And Money Heist has become a global sensation, after not having done well initially in its home country of Spain. It follows an odd group as they attempt to rob the Royal Mint of Spain and leave with…€984 million.
I know what you’re thinking, impossible right? But don’t underestimate the Professor, the intelligent man behind the entire heist. You’ll fall in love with the characters, cheer them on, cry with them, feel their pain and their adrenaline. It’s 5 seasons long, but it’s worth every minute!
Bella ciao!
Never Have I Ever
A light-hearted, coming-of-age teen dramedy telling the story of south-Asian teenager Devi, as she copes with her teenage life after the passing of her father at her recital show, the loss of her leg movement (for 3 months) and the trials and tribulations of her love life and friends. A show created by Mindy Kaling, it has been widely praised for its south-Asian representation.
There’s currently 2 seasons out on Netflix and another 2 confirmed!
Ozark
A Netflix crime drama based upon the characters created by Elmore Leonard. Starring Jason Bateman, Laura Linney, Portia Doubleday, Michael Eklund and more, this shows us what happens when the criminal underworld collides with the world of legitimate enterprise.
Are you able to keep up?
The Haunting of Hill House
The newest addition from the creative minds behind Netflix’s hit Stranger Things comes from director Mike Flanagan (Gerald’s Game) and writer/creator Carlton Cuse. Hill House was built over 100 years ago as a refuge for a wealthy Virginia family, but now it may be haunted by ghosts that have long been trapped inside its walls.
Lupin
If you’re a fan of a crime/mystery thriller that will literally have you on the edge of your seats, then Lupin is your next best show! With 2 seasons out, it’s your next Friday night binge. Omar Sy stars as a man seeking revenge against a creepy tycoon who framed his late father for a crime he didn’t commit.
Inspired by literary icon Arsène Lupin, it’s a must-watch.
Dead To Me
This dark and twisted mystery-comedy is about a grieving widow who makes a new friend. But there’s something odd about her…you won’t be able to stop watching once you’re sucked in.
The ending will have you in shock, and there are 2 seasons, with another on its way!
After Life
A show that stands out from the rest. Instead of being full of crime and murder, it explores the grief and depression after losing a loved one. Ricky Gervais plays a grieving widower who is trying to carry on after the death of his wife. The only solace is his dog, everything else to him is pointless.
But don’t think it’s all doom and gloom, it’s full of comedic scenes and swearing (lots) of it, so be warned!
There are 3 seasons on Netflix, and they’re worth every tear.
The Crown
Queen Elizabeth II has ascended to the throne at an early age, with her father having passed away. A dramatised show capturing the essence of the Royal family and the trials and tribulations of their lives. It’s definitely a binge-worthy series!
A Netflix drama that will have you transfixed, curious and ready for the next series!
There’s plenty more to watch, so have a look and find something that is right up your street!
10 Films on Netflix for Parents
Don’t Look Up
With a star-studded cast (Leonardo DiCaprio, Meryl Streep, Jennifer Lawrence and Jonah Hill), it tells a story about two scientists who discover a comet on a collision course with Earth. However, when they share this with the President, they’re unwilling to help or disclose it, not wanting the world to end during her presidency. The scientists end up being defamed but still try their hardest to get the world to just look up.
A thought-provoking film that can be eerily similar to the current world issues. Make of it as you will.
The Guilty
A thriller that will have you gasping in shock at the end. A 911 dispatch caller (Jake Gyllenhaal) is determined to save a woman’s life as she calls in for help. But as the mystery goes on and many different calls, he soon realises things aren’t what they seem…and he’s caught in a much larger web.
Fear Street Trilogy
If you like horror, mystery and the paranormal, then this is for you. With another Netflix experiment, the story is split into 3 films…following a group of teenagers as they battle an evil force that has been in play for centuries, terrorising their town in brutal slayings. Set in 1666, 1978 and 1994.
Keep your eyes open and watch till the end! Make a movie night out of it and grab the popcorn!
The Platform
A Spanish dystopian film taking place in the future at a prison. The inmates are fed via a platform that descends from the top floor to the bottom. Simple right? But…those at the top get the first pick and those below are left with scraps or left to starve However, one determined inmate is dead set on changing this.
A film that is gruesome and difficult to stop at times, but portrays a deeper message of mass incarceration, wealth disparity and more. Sounds like a handful, but it’s worth the watch.
I Am Mother
Set in a dystopian world where the human population has seemingly been made extinct. In a futuristic bunker, a teenager is brought up by a robot, designed to repopulate the Earth. But when a stranger arrives, their trust is thrown into disarray.

No one can resist a bit of comedy sprinkled with love…

Tick, Tick…Boom!
A tragic story of Jonathon Larson (author of the musical Rent!). A brilliant musical genius but unfortunately never got to see his work reach its success, after having passed away from undiagnosed Marfan syndrome on the day of Rent’s Broadway premiere. As they say, he was the father of rock musicals.
Directed by Lin-Manuel Miranda, it’s an absolute gem for those who love musicals and of course, starring the brilliant Andrew Garfield!
