The Castle's origins can be traced back to the Roman period when a fort was built on the site. This was later replaced by a Norman motte-and-bailey castle in the 11th century, before undergoing several phases of expansion and renovation over the centuries. With each ruler ad owner adding their own style to the architecture, the Castle now has an abundance of various features.

He hired the famous Victorian architect William Burges to transform the castle into a grand, Gothic Revival palace. Burges added opulent interiors with a number of impressive architectural features, such as the impressive Clock Tower where you can hear about the Black Tower tales. As well as the Arab Room, Barbican Tower and the stunning Banqueting Hall which holds elaborate carvings!
The Victorian gothic Castle also offers tours where you can visit the State Apartments where you can peak a glimpse into the luxurious lifestyle of the Castle's guests. Also, there is an impressive art gallery showcasing the 19th century Arts and Crafts movement and a temporary exhibition space which host different themes throughout the year!
