For over 2,000 years Cardiff Castle has housed the Romans, the Normans, right up to the Victorians and the local community during WWII airstrikes. Today, however, it’s home to tours, workshops and dressing up - but always with that healthy dose of history!
Begin with a tour of the grounds using an audio guide aimed at kids, with tales of prisoners held captive in the Norman Keep or the onslaught of enemy armies. You’ll spot the Roman-built walls and explore Wartime tunnels where more than 1,800 people used to hide as sirens rang out across the city. Kids will especially love trying on soldiers’ uniforms and holding an ancient musket.
Discover countless luxurious rooms in the main house on a guided tour and keep eyes peeled for the secrets left behind by William Burges, or for Banquo the earless dog who’ll kick kids off on the Animal Trail. Special events and workshops also feature frequently throughout the year including the daredevil Joust! performance, or an education in battle strategy during The Romans’ Return.

Loads to do!
Written by lisaaao . 07.12.17
This is a must-visit if you’re in the Welsh capital, there’s so much to do! Climb the Norman Keep for amazing views over Cardiff (there’s 50 steep steps up, but so worth it), and the Firing Line museum has loads of great dress up and hands-on activities for kids. There’s also hawks and owls in the grounds too, and loads of spaces for a picnic – so definitely lots for a full day out. We’re already planning to go back for one of themed weekends too, we absolutely loved it!
Check out the animal statues!

We came here for their annual cheese festival and had a great time. We sat out on the grass, had a bit of a nosy around the keep and obviously ate lots of cheese - best bit was looking at the funny animal statues along the front. They’re easy to miss though.
Stunning castle

Cardiff Castle is a great day out. There's lots to see and do. A large part of the displays are more suitable for adults though, so you'll have to be creative to keep young ones entertained for the whole visit.
