Take a journey through North Road Station Museum to discover how the famous Stockton & Darlington Railway was created and the influence Darlington's rich pioneering connections with the railways helped to influence life, and development, in the North East and across the world.
Inside the Museum are railway vehicles including locomotives and carriages. There is a replica Locomotion No.1 for families to play on, too! There is also an array of exciting digital features including selfie screens, photo opportunities and more.
From the windows of the museum, you can see the live railway line where you can see Northern Trains operating!
Finish your visit to the railway museum with a ride on Experiment!, the North East's only permanent immersive experience ride.
Burn off some energy at Wagon Woods, our outdoor railway-themed play park. Climb, run, jump, solve puzzles, ring the bell, get in the barrel and more whilst learning about how important the Stockton & Darlington Railway was. You can easily spend hours of fun in here.
There is a toddler park within Wagon Woods and a picnic area for you to enjoy your (or our) food.
See the glorious Skerne Bridge. Built in 1824/1825 for the Stockton & Darlington Railway, the bridge holds the distinction of being the oldest railway bridge in the world still in operation! Some feat. It also featured on the £5 note in the 1990s/early 2000s.
If you head into the Carriage Works you'll discover two areas, the Stores and the Exhibition Hall.
In the Stores will see 30,000 historic railway-themed objects, artefacts and resources that make up our collection. From maps to name plates, a railway model to model locomotives, furniture, clothing, suitcases and more - there's plenty to see and something for everyone.
The Exhibition Hall plays host to blockbuster exhibitions and there's something different in there every couple of months. Previously we've had large Lego models, we've had locomotives, a STEAM exhibition and more! Check our website to see what's on.
The Viewing Gallery in Darlington Locomotive Works grants you the opportunity to see the UKs newest steam locomotive, the Prince of Wales, under construction. When finished, the Prince of Wales will be the most powerful, and fastest, steam locomotive in the UK.
We also have a shop selling gifts and souvenirs suitable for all ages and audiences. The shop features cool railway features too including the UKs only railway-themed split-flap display!
Next door to the shop is our cafe selling a range of hot and cold food and drink. Whilst enjoying your refreshments make sure to look up at our live model railway steaming above your heads, and head over to our Hologauze feature to discover famous locomotives associated with Darlington.
Make sure to try our super exclusive Black Diamond ice-cream. It' a black cone, your ice cream flavour of choice, black sprinkles and black wafer. It's named after the third locomotive built for the Stockton & Darlington Railway and only available here!

The oldest operating railway bridge in the world!
The Grade I listed Skerne Bridge holds the distinction of being the oldest railway bridge in the world still in continuous use. It is a lasting symbol of the birth of the railways, connecting towns and cities for the first time and ushering in the Industrial Revolution.
Designed by Ignatius Bonomi and built in 1825 by George Stephenson using local stone, the bridge famously carried Locomotion No.1 with a train of coal and passengers across the River Skerne on 27 September 1825.
Traffic over the bridge increased far beyond the S&DR's expectations, and by 1828 the embankments leading to the bridge were showing serious damage. In 1829 the railway engaged John Falcus Carter of Heighington to repair it. He added curved flanking walls, holding back earth ramparts, that shored up Bonomi's failing embankments.
The bridge is perhaps most famous for appearing on the reverse of the five pound note during the 1990s alongside George Stephenson and Locomotion No.1.
In 1970 the bridge was listed as Scheduled monument number 1002331. In 2021, Historic England gave it a new designation as Grade I listed in recognition of its architectural and historic interest.
The bridge is still used today by local trains services.
Wagon Woods Play Park
The Stockton & Darlington Railway wasn’t the achievement of one person alone – it was the result of working together to make discoveries and solve problems. Not just grown-ups, but children too!
The rope has snapped and the coal wagons are hurtling down the hill. There’s nothing to stop them – until local children derail them with logs and save the day! Sounds exciting? It’s a true story! Those children lived near the Brusselton Incline, a Georgian feat of engineering which was part of the Stockton & Darlington Railway.
Based on the Brusselton Incline, Wagon Woods is Hopetown Darlington’s outdoor adventure play park designed and built by CAP.CO, the experts behind adventure play at Sandringham Estate, Blenheim Palace, and The Plotters’ Forest at Raby Castle.
With intersecting rail-track walkways, a chimney to climb, and a 50 metre boardwalk through the trees, Wagon Woods has been 3.5 years in the making. Developed in consultation with local primary schools and childminders, the play park includes an accessible incline track with interactive features and a companion slide suitable for wheelchair users.
Including a specially-designed toddler area, Wagon Woods is a day out for all the family.
