Toddlers are great for crafting with as they are often super keen to get involved with making something! As with most activities you’ll find that toddler crafts might need to be adapted or changed due to both what your child is able to do and most importantly, what they actually fancy doing on any given day, but this cardboard blower is a bit of a winner as they can decorate it however they fancy and then have a play with it afterwards. I’ve also shared some more crafts for toddlers afterwards to give you a bit more inspiration!
You will need:
- Cardboard
- Tissue paper
- Double sided sellotape
- Stickers / paint / colouring pens
How to make this toddler craft:
- Start by cutting some cardboard into the shape that you use to make your cardboard tube. For crafts like this I often use toilet rolls, however having done potty training with two kids I’m a little hesitant to use toilet rolls that they’ve used as something that’s then going to go anywhere near anyone’s mouth! We cut our cardboard into a square shape which is fine for making a cardboard tube blower but for smaller hands you might find it easier to make one side slightly longer to make it easier to roll.
- Next up is decorating. On one side of your cardboard decorate with whatever you can find, we’ve used stickers because they’re great for fine motor skills and mess free (hurray!) but you could let your child do a drawing or painting instead.
- Turn your cardboard over and put a strip of double sided stickytape along one side then cut your tissue paper into some strips and stick them along the tape. For little ones that have started using scissors this is a great way to practice their scissor skills as they’re just cutting in straight lines and it won’t notice at all if they’re less than perfect but if not the tissue paper is fun to use and stick down and you can chat about the colours and the noise it makes.
- Finally put another strip of double sided sellotape along the next side of your cardboard and roll the cardboard up to make a tube shape with your tissue paper streamers at the bottom ready to blow and play with. While I was making my version of this craft my daughter who is in preschool made her own – can’t resist the opportunity to craft with some glittery stickers!
