Pancake day is here, the one day of the year when your kids are genuinely excited to help out in the kitchen! Whilst we love a crepe, traditional fat pancakes tend to work best for decorating. We used a simple recipe to whip up our batch, however, we’ve also included our favourite banana and oat mixture should you wish to be extra healthy. If your stomach isn’t rumbling yet it will be soon, check out how to make our fun and easy pancake art for kids below.

When is pancake day 2024?
Pancake Day (or Shrove Tuesday) is on Tuesday 13th February this year, and it changes based on Easter dates. It falls the day before lent starts, and stems from the tradition to use up all the things you have in your kitchen cupboards, before giving up things for lent! Ready to get stuck in? Let’s start with a recipe for making pancakes:
Ingredients for regular pancake mix:
- 200g Self-Raising Flour
- 30g Sugar
- 2 Eggs
- 300ml Milk
How to make pancake mix:
- Mix the milk & flour.
- Beat in the eggs.
- Add the sugar and stir well until everything is mixed in.
- Cook your pancakes for a minute on each side, checking they’re cooked through before serving.
Ingredients for oat & banana pancake mix:
- 2 bananas
- 2 eggs
- 1/2 cup oats (we recommend rolled)
- 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
- pinch of salt
- pinch of cinnamon
How to make oat & banana pancake mix:
- Using a blender, blend all the ingredients until smooth.
- Cook your pancakes for a minute on each side, checking they’re cooked through before serving.
5 easy pancake art ideas:
-
The Dinosaur
Start with a regular pancake shape and cut off the bottom (leaving around 3/4). Next, use this small slice to form the tail. Chop a banana, using one half for the neck and the remainder to cut 4 small legs. Finally use strawberry slices to form the back, a blueberry for the eyes and the ground and the stubs of the strawberry to make some trees.
-
Minnie Mouse
For this cute Minnie Mouse idea, simply whip up 2 small pancakes for the ears and one larger one to form the face. Next, up halve two strawberries and a piece of banana to create a bow and add a blueberry for the nose. Lastly, add whiskers using a knife and some Nutella!
-
Minions
If your kids are obsessed with Minions then these pancakes will go down a treat! You’ll need to pour the mixture to make the Minion shapes, for example, one long and short pancake if you’re making Bob + Stuart. Use some Nutella on the bottom half to create a base for your blueberries, which will make the dungarees. Next up, use slices of bananas and some more blueberries to make the eyes and thinly sliced raisins for the hair. Lastly, use a little Nutella to draw on a smile!
-
Bunny
For the bunny, start by halving a banana to create the ears and use a couple of slices for the eyes and what’s left over to make the teeth. You’ll also need a slice of strawberry for the nose and a couple of blueberries to finish off the eyes. Once you’ve arranged them onto your pancake, use some Nutella to create some whiskers.

The ‘In A Hurry’ Bear
It might be pancake day but that doesn’t mean we don’t have to rush off to school! Luckily, this 2-second bear design can be whipped up in no time. All you need is a pancake, three slices of banana for the ears and three blueberries to make the eyes and nose. Don’t forget to give him a smile with some Nutella and a drizzle of honey!
