Why Do We Carve Pumpkins?

Oh, for all sorts of reasons! Not only is it a fun and creative tradition that families love, but it’s all about getting into the spooky spirit and turning a plain old pumpkin into a glowing masterpiece! Kids and parents alike enjoy scooping out the seeds (which can get a bit messy!), and then using their imagination to carve funny, spooky, or silly faces. The tradition comes from an old legend about ‘Jack-o’-lanterns’, but these days, it’s more about having a laugh, getting creative, and lighting up your doorstep with your pumpkin creation. Plus, it’s a great way to spend some family time together in the lead-up to Halloween!

With endless fun pumpkin carving ideas, the possibilities are simply endless! Whether you use your favourite films or characters as inspiration or just want to make a scary pumpkin. It’s best to use a fresh pumpkin, unlesssss you want to make it extra spooky and gross with an old and droop pumpkin – it really adds to the aesthetic!

Top Tips For Pumpkin Carving

So, you’ve got your orange pumpkins, white pumpkins, and small or even larger pumpkins, and you don’t know where to start! Well, we’re here to make things easier for your pumpkin ideas; with our top tips, your Halloween season can start off with a breeze!

    1. Get a good carving set
It might go without saying, but having the proper equipment and tools goes a long way when it comes to creating a masterpiece on your pumpkin! This pumpkin carving set is perfect for creating your creepy pumpkin, and it’s safer for small hands too, but that being said, it may be better if you’re on hand to help your little monsters! If the adults are doing the carving, then make sure you use a sharp knife or carving knife to make it easier to cut through any regular pumpkin. Using a blunt knife will make it tricky and you could hurt yourself! Even a serrated knife will do the trick!
    2. Get a good pumpkin for carving
So you’ve got your carving kit, you know what you want your pumpkin to look like, now you just need to find the perfect pumpkin! There’s a whole range of different types of pumpkins, from big to baby pumpkins and from perfectly round to a little bit squished, but it’s true that some pumpkins are better for carving than others, so make sure you find one that has a nice surface for carving into. You can grab your pumpkins at your local supermarket or a pumpkin-picking farm near you. There are hundreds of farms all across the UK that not only have pumpkins of all shapes, sizes and colours but also have exciting Halloween events on, too! Not to mention perfect photo opportunities to get a scarily good selfie!See where your nearest pumpkin patch is and plan a day out.
    3. Have a bowl for the insides
Before you start carving, you’ll want to scoop out the innards of your pumpkin, and this is where it can get very messy! To put a light inside to light up your creepy face, you’ll want a nice and clean inside of your pumpkin, so you’ll need to scoop out all the pumpkin flesh and it makes the carving so much easier if you get that done. This is where the kids can get involved because, let’s face it, all kids love getting messy! You can carve the pumpkin with a sharp knife and then the kids can grab the spoons and scoop all the pumpkin guts out! Then you have a blank canvas for your fang-tastic pumpkin carving design.
    4. Keep it fresh
Once you’ve carved your pumpkin, you’ll want to stop it from rotting before Halloween! All you have to do is give your pumpkin a cold bath! Soak your pumpkin in a cold bath, and you can add in a little splash of bleach to prevent mould. Rub your pumpkin dry as soon as you take it out, and your carving will be fresh as a daisy!
    5. Have a water spray bottle handy
To help your pumpkin keep its structure, have a water spray bottle handy when you sit down to carve it! Once you start carving your pumpkin, it starts losing water, and this can sometimes cause it to shrink or start to crumble over, so keep a spray bottle on hand and give your pumpkin a little spritz every now and then to keep its moisture levels up.

Kids adore Halloween, and they love seeing all the amazing creative ideas for pumpkin carving, but there’s often a little bit of an issue with them – they’re designed for adults to create and not for kids. Of course, there’s nothing wrong at all with pumpkin designs for grown-ups – some of them are mind-blowingly amazing (you must have seen the Tinkerbell one, right? With a zillion stars? Game changer.)

But there are few of us who can look at these gorgeous intricate designs with tiny drill holes all over them and think there is no way we’re letting the kids operate a drill! So, we need to find creative pumpkin ideas that kids can easily recreate.

The Best Pumpkin Carving Ideas To Try With The Kids

Pumpkin Carving Idea 1: Traditional Jack O’Lantern

A traditional Jack O’Lantern is a great pumpkin carving idea for kids to try, as they don’t have to do anything too complicated for anyone to know what it is. Go for as friendly or scary as they fancy!

Don’t forget to add a real candle to the mouth hole to make it super spooky. If you don’t want to use a real candle, then opt for LED lights or battery-operated lights.

Pumpkin Carving Idea 2: Vomiting Pumpkin

I know, gross, huh? We know this will be a winner with the kids! Plus, it’s also really easy to make as the main part of it is just cutting a big shape out for the mouth and pulling out the insides or using the insides from other pumpkins. If you make this one, I’d highly recommend putting it on something easy to clean, as no one wants to spend Halloween evening scrubbing pumpkin vomit off their driveway in the dark.

Pumpkin Carving Idea 3: Cute Cat Pumpkin

Perfect for animal-mad kids or just as a nice change from anything scary. Pumpkin cats aren’t too tricky to make either, and you can make the ears from bits of leftover pumpkins and hold them in place with cocktail sticks. Don’t forget the toothy grin!

You can add batter-operated tea lights inside so the cat is lit up, too!

Pumpkin Carving Idea 4: Cookie Cutter Ghost Pumpkin

Using cookie cutters to carve pumpkins is a super fun and easy way to create cool designs with the kids! All you need is a sturdy metal cookie cutter, a little bit of muscle, and a rubber mallet or small hammer. Just press the cookie cutter into the pumpkin’s skin, give it a few taps with the mallet, and voilà—you’ve got perfect shapes cut out, whether it’s stars, hearts, or even Halloween-themed shapes like bats or ghosts.

It’s a great alternative to traditional carving, especially for little hands that might find carving tricky. Plus, it makes pumpkin decorating a whole lot quicker and less messy, which means more time for Halloween fun!

Pumpkin Carving Idea 5: Little Pumpkin, Big Pumpkin

You can keep the classic scary pumpkin with its serrated fangs and spooky eyes but with a surprise twist – an adorable baby pumpkin inside! Have the larger pumpkin in one colour, like the traditional orange pumpkin and have the baby pumpkin a different colour.

Plenty of pumpkin patches have little pumpkins that are white, green and even yellow – so you’ll have plenty of choice! The last thing you need to do is carve a shocked face on the mini pumpkin and place it in the mouth of the big pumpkin!

Don’t forget to add a candle!

Pumpkin Carving Idea 6: Shadow Pumpkin

Be a little different and create boo-tifully creative pumpkin shadows!! How do you do it? It’s super simple. You can carve any design on your pumpkin, whether you’re into detailed designs like Mickey Mouse, or you opt for simple design ideas for kids to get stuck into.

Then either place your scarily good pumpkin on its back up against a wall, or right next to the wall with it’s face towards the wall and watch how the shadow of the face flickers.

Psst…it’s probably a good idea to use LED lights for this pumpkin carving idea, as it’ll be on its back.

Pumpkin Carving Idea 7: Painted Pumpkins

If you want to add an extra spooky twist to your pumpkin, why not paint the pumpkins black?! So, when you add your candle, it’ll flicker in the dark, but you’ll only see the toothless grin in the night. Scary, right? Especially if you opt for a more evil-looking pumpkin – because why not? Halloween is scary (for some!).

You can choose to paint the entire pumpkin black (even the inside) or just paint the pumpkin black on the outside.

Pumpkin Carving Idea 8: Geometric Patterns

If your kids are older and have a bit more patience, why not opt for more intricate details like geometric patterns? The best part is that you can be fully creative and carve anything you want! Whether it’s diamond shapes, or squares or a mixture of everything, the world is your oyster (or should I say pumpkin?).

Then add a candle or fake tea lights, and you’ve got yourself a fa-boo-lous creation!

Enjoyed these fang-tastic pumpkin carving ideas? Pumpkin carving is a fun and creative way to bring the family together during the Halloween season. Whether you’re going for a classic spooky face, experimenting with cookie cutters, or getting wildly imaginative, it’s all about enjoying the process and creating something unique. So, grab your pumpkins, gather the family, and get carving—because there’s nothing quite like seeing your glowing Jack-o’-lantern light up the night, adding a little magic to Halloween!

Things To Remember When Pumpkin Carving

  1. Buy the pumpkin carving kits from the shops – yes, they do feel overpriced for what is essentially a couple of bits of plastic and a tiny flimsy knife, but these carving tools are a lot safer for kids, too. The tool for planning out your design before you start cutting is also super helpful.
  2. Have wipes and a bin bag at the ready – this is really messy work and you’ll want to tidy as you go as much as possible.
  3. Know what your child is capable of – make sure the pumpkin carving design isn’t too much for them and their little hands.
  4. Don’t let your kids look at pumpkin designs on Pinterest – yes, there are some awesome pumpkin carving ideas on there, but can you really recreate it? I know I couldn’t… Unless you want to spend the next four hours of your life carving a scene from Star Wars out of the side of a pumpkin, it’s safer to just not go there.
  5. Rub Vaseline along the edges – this sounds weird, I know. But apparently, rubbing petroleum jelly along the cut edges keeps them from drying out quickly. Making sure they last longer! It’s genius.
