1. Toy Story (1995)
Runtime: 80 minutes Rating: G
What if toys were alive and we didn’t know it? This is a question many of us have entertained when we were little. Toy Story lives in a universe where this scenario is reality. We are introduced to Andy’s favourite toy, Sheriff Woody, who is afraid that he might get replaced by the boy’s new fancy Buzz Lightyear toy. To make things even more complicated, Buzz believes he’s a real astronaut and Andy’s new neighbour Sid is a violent boy who enjoys breaking toys. With a happy ending and a whole franchise to follow, the original Toy Story movie is a good family film, packed with lots of humour and plenty of action to keep you on your toes until the end.
2. Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone (2001)
Runtime: 151 minutes Rating: PG
Growing up alongside Harry Potter and his wizard friends has defined the childhood of an entire generation. Who’s to say your little ones can’t enjoy the same experience? Invite them to an epic adventure in the world of magic with Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone – the first installment in the franchise spanning across 8 movies. See young Harry enter The Hogwarts School of Wizardry and Magic and relive his first encounters with Harmione, Ron and the rest of your beloved characters. It’s a great little nostalgic trip down memory lane for the fans out there and a wonderful new adventure for anyone who hasn’t seen the film yet.
3. Mulan (1999)
Runtime: 88 minutes Rating: G
Way before Frozen brought strong female leads into the spotlight, Mulan was busy single-handedly taking down the fearsome army of the Huns and saving China. Impersonating a man, in order to enlist in the army and save her elderly father, Mulan shows outstanding bravery, spirit and creativity. She was the first Disney princess who stood against gender stereotypes and proved that a girl can do anything she puts her mind to. If you want your little girls to see a great role model in action, this is where you begin.
4. Princess Mononoke (1997)
Runtime: 133 minutes Rating: PG-13
Two years before Disney introduced Mulan, Studio Ghibli’s Princess Mononoke hit the market and made waves across the world. San (aka Princess Mononoke) is a fearless fighter who rides a literal wolf-god into battle against the humans who’re ravaging Earth. Prince Ashitaka is drawn into the whirlwind of San’s war and their relationship grows without becoming a cliched fairytale romance. Princess Mononoke is morally complex and philosophically inspired. It’s more than just a good family move, it’s a masterpiece. Just bare in mind, it’s PG-13, due to some violent scenes, so we’d advise you to save it until the kids are at least 10.
5. Coco (2017)
Runtime: 109 minutes Rating: P
Coco is one of the lesser known gems of the last few years. The lovable protagonis Miguel is a young boy who dreams of being a musician but has the (mis)fortune of coming from a family that has a very complicated history with music. Driven by his passion, he finds himself in the Land of the Dead, despite being perfectly alive. While trying to rejoin the living, Miguel gets to know the dead and untangles a mystery from the past. The movie’s resolution will have you weeping with a bittersweet mixture of sadness and joy. Coco approaches some difficult topics but it’s musical, colourful and brilliantly written, so we think it’s a family movie night must.
6. The Lion King (1994)
Runtime: 87 minutes Rating: G
One of the most revered Disney classics, The Lion King is a rollercoaster of a movie – most of the time it leaves you with a wonderfully cheerful feeling in your chest, but we all know it’s made more than one or two adults cry. You little ones will be totally engrossed, as you follow Simba’s adventurous journey from a tiny cub to becoming the Lion King. Between “Circle of Life”, “I Just Can’t Wait to Be King” and “Hakuna Matata”, you’ll be left with plenty of sing-a-long golden goodies playing in your head too.
7. My Neighbor Totoro (1988)
Runtime: 87 minutes Rating: G
A Hayao Miyazaki classic, My Neighbor Totoro is a fascinating kids’ film about two little girls and their new friend – a ginormous, extra-cuddly forest spirit called Totoro. You may wonder how a film that nearly didn’t get made and flopped at the box office, turned into a world-wide phenomenon with influence over pop culture and the movie industry spanning decades. Well, all we can say is that there’s simply something magical about Totoro. You’ll just have to watch and find out!
8. Home Alone (1990)
Runtime: 103 minutes Rating: PG
OK, let’s face it, we’ve all watched Home Alone about a million times by now. This must be one of the most famous family movies, especially around Christmas. Macaulay Culkin’s Kevin is both smart and adorable, despite being a bit mischievous (but what kid isn’t?), which makes him arguably one of the most iconic child characters in movie history. We’ve got to say that watching an 8-year old defend his house from burglars does entail quite a bit of violence, however, it’s all so cartoonish that if you allow your kids to watch Looney Tunes, this should also be fine.
9. Beauty and the Beast (1991)
Runtime: 85 minutes Rating: G
Beauty and the Beast is an immortal Disney classic and has definitely earned its spot amongst the best kids movies out there. The story teaches us to look beyond what’s on the surface, and that it’s OK to be different. Book-loving Belle feels like an outsider in her provincial hometown but it’s precisely her independent spirit that gives her the courage to see beyond the terrifying looks of the Beast. She gives him the chance to prove to everyone (including himself) that people can change and that he deserves redemption. It’s an overall beautiful story, with classic songs and unforgettable visuals.
10. Despicable Me (2010)
Runtime: 95 minutes Rating: PG
An evil genius, who has his own army of minions, is not your usual protagonist but Despicable Me does a great job of presenting supervillain Gru as a perfectly lovable character (he has his own evil hopes and dreams, you know). What makes this a good family movie is that it’s funny, fresh and relatable. Even a man who knows how to steal the moon isn’t prepared for three orphaned children suddenly bursting into his life. After all, being a dad is way more difficult than being a supervillain!
11. The LEGO Movie (2014)
Runtime: 101 minutes Rating: PG
We don’t know whether it’s the innovative approach, the clever jokes and well-written plot, or it’s simply Chris Pratt’s personality coming through, but The LEGO Movie is simply hilarious. Watch ordinary LEGO man Emmet get catapulted out of his ordinary LEGO life straight into a battle against an evil tyrant who wants to rule the world. It’s truly amazing how a toy-based film (which is a concept seemingly predetermined to flop) turns out to be a wildly inspiring joyous event you just want to rewatch over and over again. Family movie night material right there!
12. Inside Out (2015)
Runtime: 94 minutes Rating: PG
If anyone ever wondered if Pixar still got it, in 2015 Inside Out came out and answered with a huge, emotionally-striking YES! Taking place within the head of 11-year old Riley, this movie shows the inner emotions of a child in a surprisingly insightful way. Your little ones will have lots of fun watching the action unfold and you, as a parent, will be left with a new-found understanding of your kids’ behaviour. Once again – Bravo, Pixar!
13. Frozen (2013)
Runtime: 102 minutes Rating: PG
Frozen is arguably the most popular kids’ movie of the last decade. As overplayed as it may be today, you can’t deny the film broke the mould when it came out. Disney finally demonstrated that it can create a hit without the stereotypical love-after-one-song story driving the plot. Here we see how Queen Elsa puts her Kingdom of Arendelle under an icy spell, in an attempt to isolate herself and protect the people she loves from her own powers, so her sister Anna ventures out into the perpetual winter to bring her back with the power of sisterly love. Truth is – kids love it and “Let it go” is a tune. Are you singing it already?
14. Howl’s Moving Castle (2005)
Runtime: 119 minutes Rating: PG
Here’s one of the latest kids’ film classics by the genius pairing of Hayao Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli. Howl’s Moving Castle tells the story of an ordinary girl, called Sophie, and her budding friendship with Howl – a wizard who happens to have a flying castle. After a jealous witch turns Sophie into an elderly woman, Howl has to use his magical powers to save his friend. This is a fantasy adventure both you and the little ones will enjoy.
15. Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope (1977)
Runtime: 125 minutes Rating: PG
The Star Wars franchise has influenced multiple generations of sci-fi lovers. What better way to spend your evenings with the kids than to explore a galaxy far, far away with a bucket of popcorn in hand? An undying battle between good and evil, filled with cosmic flight stunts and swooshing lightsaber fights – it’s simply an adventure that captures the imagination of viewers of all ages. The entire Star Wars series rewatch, you must, young padawan!
16. Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (2001)
Runtime: 165 minutes Rating: PG-13
Yes, it’s PG-13; yes, it is long (like REALLY long); and yes, it can get scary, but the Lord of the Rings is an epic tale we believe any family should experience together. Tolkein’s works have shaped the entire fantasy genre and anything which comes afterwards is, in one way or another, influenced by them. The LOTR trilogy was created and brought to life by a team who had grown up loving the books, so it is as respectful to the original material as possible. This is not just a good family movie, it’s a life-changer!
17. The Princess Bride (1987)
Runtime: 98 minutes Rating: PG
If your kids are a bit younger, and they can’t concentrate on anything as long as Lord of the Rings yet, we’ve got a fairy-tale adventure with pricnesses and knights that is more easily-digestible – The Princess Bride. This is a classic tale of a beautiful young girl and her one true love, who fight all obstacles in their way until their love triumphs at the end. With a timeless story and a funny script full of action, this family film will appeal to boys too. It features legendary WWE Hall of Famer Andre the Giant, after all..
18. E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial (1982)
Runtime: 114 minutes Rating: PG
Oh, E.T.! Who knew aliens could be this adorable? Having passed the test of time with flying colours, E.T. has earned its spot amongst the best family films of all time. The heart-warming friendship between little human boy Eliott and a lonely alien who got stranded on Earth has captivated audiences all over the world for nearly 40 years. You’ve grown up with the story, it’s time to pass the joy on to your kids; you won’t be disappointed.
19. Never Ending Story (1984)
Runtime: 94 minutes Rating: PG
Never Ending Story stands side by side with Labyrinth as one of the most memorable fantasy movies of the 80s. Real life and fantasy intertwine, as Bastian, a book-loving kid, reads the story of Fantasia, an imaginary world which is threatened to be destroyed by the faceless Nothing, and finds out that only his imagination can save Fantasia. The story explores the love of books and the creative power of a child’s imagination in such a compelling way that it’s bound to spark up your kids’ interest in reading.
20. Mary Poppins (1964)
Runtime: 139 minutes Rating: G
The 60’s original Mary Poppins is a feel-good family film with lots of musical numbers that kids of all ages will enjoy. The adventures of the magical nanny and the lucky Banks kids, who are under her care, are inoffensive, fun and simply whimsical. Since there are hardly any scary scenes and there are no terrifying villains, you can put this down as one of the best movies for toddlers too. Plus, let’s be honest, you’ll love revisiting this childhood classic as well!
21. Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1937)
Runtime: 83 minutes Rating: G
A list of the best kids’ films can’t go without Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs; it was the first ever Disney feature length movie and it put Walt Disney Studios on the map. This was the era of hand-drawn animation, so the artwork is bright and original. The seven dwarfs and their musical pieces are what brings the whole story to life. Pretty much all of the scary bits from the original Grimm tale were cut out or toned down, so this is one of the best movies for toddlers.
22. Tangled (2010)
Runtime: 100 minutes Rating: PG
Tangled is the tale of Rapunzel reimagined by Disney. In this version, the beautiful princess isn’t just a damsel in distress, in fact she gives her supposed savior, Flyn Rider, a good beating with a frying pan before they decide to venture outside the tower walls together. Fearless, curious and hungry for new experiences, Rapunzel’s character inevitably draws in viewers of all ages. Tangled is a funny family movie you’ll find yourself rewatching with the kids more than once.
23. Spirited Away (2002)
Runtime: 124 minutes Rating: PG
Feel like we’ve gone too long without a mention of Hayao Miyazaki on this list, so let’s rectify this! Spirited Away is another kids’ film which will entertain adults just as much. Miyazaki once again dips into the spirit world through the eyes of a child. 10-year-old Chihiro’s parents get turned into giant pigs and it’s up to the little girl to save her family by working at an amusement park for supernatural beings. Sounds odd? Yeah, it is, we’re not going to lie, but it is a spectacular work of art. If your kids are very young and easily scared, you might want to steer away from Spirited Away for a little while though.
24. The Parent Trap (1998)
Runtime: 127 minutes Rating: PG
The Parent Trap is a modern-day version of “The Double Lothen” by Erich Kestner, one the best children’s books of all time. Watch as two identical twin sisters accidently bump into each other at summer camp to find out their parents had divorced, each taking one child with them. Having discovered they had family they never knew about, the two girls decide to swap places and trick their parents into getting back together. The Parent Trap is a feel-good funny family movie which is going to make all of you happy.
25. Homeward Bound – The Incredible Journey (1993)
Runtime: 85 minutes Rating: G
If you love animals, you’ll love this movie! Homeward Bound – The Incredible Journey follows three brave pets: Chance, a thrill-seeking bulldog; Shadow, a wise golden retriever; and Sassy, a cautious cat. These three get left at a friend’s ranch while their owners are on holiday, but as any normal pet, they immediately think their owners may have left for good, so they decide to find their way home on their own. It’s an adventurous animal movie the kids will adore.
26. The Little Mermaid (1989)
Runtime: 85 minutes Rating: G
Here comes another light-hearted Disney take on an originally horrifying fairy tale. Unlike Andersen’s story, The Little Mermaid has a positive vibe and a cheerful happy ending, so feel free to watch it with the kids any time. Enter into the life of 16-year-old mermaid Ariel who’s fascinated by humans and who wants to find out what life on dry land is like. Her dream will put danger in her path but ultimately, there’s love waiting at the end, which makes it a good story to teach the little ones that the world is worth exploring.
27. Muppets Christmas Carol (1992)
Runtime: 120 minutes Rating: G
The Muppets’ take on Dickens’ “A Christmas Carol” is a combination of classic characters from your childhood and a timeless Christmas story. It’s both hilarious and thoroughly enjoyable. Basically, it’s the perfect Christmas family movie to get you all cosily curled up on the sofa in front of the TV with that fuzzy festive feeling. What? It’s never too early to start planning your family’s Christmas movies watch list!
28. The Goonies (1985)
Runtime: 115 minutes Rating: PG
The Goonies is a good old-fashioned kids’ film about a light-hearted adventure. The story introduces us to a group of children who set out to take on a property developing company to save their home from being destroyed, but stumble across a pirate treasure map along the way and find themselves on a treasure hunt instead. It’s an easy watch for the whole family (although a few swear words slip in here and there).
29. Beethoven (1992)
Runtime: 87 minutes Rating: PG
This is one of our all-time favourite animal movies and we all know there’s nothing better to watch on a family movie night than a good animal movie! A huge, super fluffy St Bernard dog, slapstick humour and family-friendly action is what you’re in for. The only thing to keep in mind is that the villain is an evil vet who uses dogs to test exploding bullets, and although the violence isn’t emphasised, the concept itself may be distressing to younger kids.
30. The Jungle Book (1967)
Runtime: 78 minutes Rating: PG
The Jungle Book tells the story of Mowgli, a human boy who has been raised by wolves, but is forced to leave the jungle when man-eating tiger Shere Khan returns and puts him in danger. On his way back to the human village, alongside his companions – the overprotective panther Bagheera and the carefree bear Baloo, Mowgli gets tangled into lots of adventures. Each adventure comes with an unforgettable song to sing along to. It’s a wonderful movie for the whole family, even for tots.
31. Labyrinth (1986)
Runtime: 101 minutes Rating: PG
David Bowie’s performance in Labyrinth is definitely one for the ages. That alone is a reason to earn this fantasy classic a rewatch with the kids. However, we’ve got to point out that if your little ones are sensitive and get scared easily, you might want to wait for them to get a bit older before watching this movie. The plot sees a young girl making her way through a maze to save her baby brother from the Goblin King. Some of the creatures she meets along the way, including the Goblin King himself, are quite scary-looking.
32. The Wizard of Oz (1939)
Runtime: 101 minutes Rating: G
This movie might be as old as time, but the fascinating journey of Dorothy in the Land of Oz is one that surpasses generational borders. With plenty of classic musical numbers and heps of fantasy adventures, your kids will be quickly drawn in by the story of the Scarecrow who needs a brain, the Tin Man missing a heart, and the Cowardly Lion who wants courage. The lesson of the story is a very strong one as well, so we definitely class The Wizard of Oz as a top family movie.
33. Back to the Future (1985)
Runtime: 116 minutes Rating: PG
Back to the Future is probably one of the best family movies to come out in the 80s. We don’t need to tell you what influence the franchise has had; you’ve lived it! The time-travelling adventures of Marty McFly and the Professor will have your tweens and anyone older glued to the screen. We don’t recommend the film for younger kids because as awesome as it is, there are some violent scenes (particularly when Biff tries to assault Marty’s mom in the car). Plus, the concept of time travel might get confusing for younger kids.
34. How to Train Your Dragon (2010)
Runtime: 98 minutes Rating: PG
Being smart is a lot less cool than being strong, especially when you’re a Viking. That’s the problem young Hiccup struggles with at the start of How to Train Your Dragon. That’s until he befriends Toothless, the most adorable dragon out there, and shows everyone that violence isn’t always the answer and that being different isn’t a bad thing after all. How to Train Your Dragon is a great kids’ film with a fun vibe and a positive message. The sequels are ones to watch too!
35. Aladdin (1992)
Runtime: 90 minutes Rating: G
There’s lots of talk surrounding the upcoming 2019 Aladdin live action remake but Disney’s 90s original animation will always have a place in our hearts. The exotic setting of Agrabah and the oriental vibe of the film set it apart from all other Disney productions. Robin Williams as the Genie is simply hysterical and “A Whole New World” is a proper sing-along tune. Also, who wouldn’t want to fly on a magic carpet after seeing this?
36. The Karate Kid (1984)
Runtime: 122 minutes Rating: PG
When it comes to good family movies, The Karate Kid is an oldie but goodie. Watch Daniel defeat his bullies after a chance encounter with a martial arts master, who takes him under his wing. The movie teaches good values and respect towards your elders, as expected from a story which dips into East Asian martial arts culture. Since there’s fighting involved and there’s the odd swear word here and there, this is something to see with your tweens.
37. Cinderella (1950)
Runtime: 60 minutes Rating: G
Cinderella is a great one to put on your list of famous Disney titles to revisit with the kids. Relive the tale of the beautiful Cinderella, a kind orphaned girl enslaved by her evil stepmother and stepsisters, and watch good prevail as the Fairy Godmother helps Cinderella meet Prince Charming, the love of her life. It’s a classic fairy-tale turned into a good family movie. Everyone needs true romance in their life every so often, don’t you think?
38. Honey, I Shrunk The Kids (1989)
Runtime: 101 minutes Rating: PG
Honey, I Shrunk The Kids is an old-school Disney comedy about an inventor who accidentally shrinks his kids to an ant’s size and throws them away with the trash before realising his mistake. Crossing the backyard to get back home turns out to be a great adventure for the kids, who are now only ¼ inch tall, and a totally hilarious ordeal for the audience. A great family movie to have a laugh with!
39. Monsters, Inc (2001)
Runtime: 92 minutes Rating: G
Are your kids scared of closet monsters? They never will be again after watching Monsters, Inc! This wonderful Pixar production shows us that (most) monsters aren’t evil at all and they are more scared of kids than kids are of them. We can’t think of a better way to beat one of childhood’s biggest fears! It’s a cute kids’ movie which is relatable enough for adults too, so you will enjoy watching it with your little ones.
40. Hook (1991)
Runtime: 136 minutes Rating: PG
Hook is as cheesy as it gets but it’s a good laugh. The premise of the movie is that Peter Pan (Robin Willaims) has grown old and settled down as a family man but he’s forced to return to Neverland after Captain Hook (Dustin Hoffman) kidnaps his children. If you just fancy a funny family film, with a great cast, amazing sets and swashbuckling pirate action, Hook is the one for you.
41. Short Circuit (1986)
Runtime: 98 minutes Rating: PG
Short Circuit is what happens when you mix comedy and sci-fi in the 80s. It’s a brilliantly funny action film about a war robot who escapes a research lab and becomes friends with a woman. The army goes after him, thinking he’s dangerous, while his creator is trying to find him and save him from being destroyed. There are lots of guns, robots and heavy war machinery, so it might not be for your youngest children but it’s generally one of the most entertaining 80s movies to watch with kids over 10.
42. The Iron Giant (1999)
Runtime: 86 minutes Rating: PG
Here’s another great story of a robot befriending a human, just this time it’s a giant robot and a very tiny human boy. As to be expected, the government gets alarmed by the huge sentient machine and seeks to destroy it but his newfound 9-year-old friend won’t let them do it. The Iron Giant is a story of finding friendship in unlikely places and how we shouldn’t judge anyone by their looks alone. What more could you want from a good kids’ film?
43. Up (2009)
Runtime: 96 minutes Rating: PG
Up may be one of Pixar’s greatest kids’ movies of all time. Wrapped around in thrilling action scenes is a touching story about overcoming grief and valuing the important things in life. Carl is a grumpy 78-year-old man who decides to tie hundreds of balloons to his house and fly it to Central America. What he hadn’t planned for was that a boy scout and his dog would accidentally tag along for the journey. And what a journey it is!
44. Matilda (1996)
Runtime: 95 minutes Rating: PG
This 90s adaptation of Roald Dahl’s classic book tells the story of the adorable, little Matilda – a wonderful little girl, who happens to have terrible parents and a bully of a headteacher. However, she realises she has magical powers and stands up for herself and her friends. There’s lots of cartoonish violence in the movie but the ending will leave you with a smile on your face. The moral of the story is that you don’t have to be defined by the bad role models in your life and you can set your own example.
45. The Little Rascals (1994)
Runtime: 98 minutes Rating: PG
This is a little nostalgia piece. The 1994 full-length feature The Little Rascals is based on a 30s serial featuring skits about a group of little boys who think “girls are gross” and get down to lots of mischief. In this classic kids’ film, the anti-girl gang is in trouble as their best soapbox car rally driver kisses a pretty girl and their soapbox car gets snatched. The social outlook shown in the movie might be outdated from an adults’ persective but the kids will enjoy the slapstick humour.
46. Land Before Time (1988)
Runtime: 70 minutes Rating: G
Land Before Time was a huge hit in the 90s. It tells the story of Little Foot, a baby-dinosaurs who loses his mum and embarks on a journey to the legendary Great Valley where he’s supposed to rejoin the rest of his family. Little Foot is not alone on his journey. His friends help him to overcome many obstacles along the way, sending a great message about the need to help each other. It’s a simple, beautifully-animated and endearing kids’ movie.
47. Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory (1971)
Runtime: 98 minutes Rating: G
The story of Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory is deeply-imaginative, in true Roald Dahl style. The story begins as five kids win a factory tour with a chance to earn a lifetime supply of chocolate at the end. The journey through the factory is absolutely whimsical, with the exception of one scene, featuring a boat ride, which might be a little too scary for young kids. Otherwise, the ending is heartwarming and Charlie (the main character) sets a great example of what it means to be a good person.
48. Free Willy (1993)
Runtime: 112 minutes Rating: PG
This is one of the best kids movies if you’re missing the 90s. Full of nostalgia, Free Willy is a movie about an orphaned boy who becomes friends with a captured Orca whale and does everything to get him freed. The story has the potential to melt the hearts of animal lovers of all ages, regardless of their generation. Shedding a tear or two is not out of the question at all…
49. Spy Kids (2001)
Runtime: 88 minutes Rating: PG
Who says only adults can do cool things? Spy Kids follows the adventures of a young brother and sister duo, who find out their mum and dad are retired spies, and go on a mission to save their parents from an evil mastermind. This is an action-packed family movie with kids taking centre stage, as crime-fighting heroes. Also, it’s only the beginning of a whole franchise, so you’ll have a few more exciting spy adventures to watch with the family.
50. George of the Jungle (1997)
Runtime: 91 minutes Rating: PG
George of the Jungle is a silly take on the story of Tarzan. It’s a funny family film to play on a night where a huge serving of cheesy, slapstick humour is all you need. By the end of this your kids will be running around yelling “George!” and “Treeeee!” , and even you will be humming the “Goerge, George, George of the Jungle” tune. Great fun for family movie night!
