Aerial Fun: 11 of the Best and Longest Zip Wires in the UK to Do With The Kids
Love a bit of adrenaline? Lazy holidays by the beach have their appeal but if you’re after something to get your blood pumping, we’d say the top 11 zip wires in the UK will do the trick!
After all, zooming through the sky, hanging by a thread (or in this case - a wire), is an experience every daredevil needs to try...
1. Zip World - Bethesda, North Wales
How about we start big? Well, it doesn’t get any bigger (or longer, or faster) than Zip World Velocity 2! Zip World offers lots of ways to experience thrills high in the sky but Velocity 2 is the crown jewel. It’s the fastest zip line in the world and the longest in Europe.
As extreme as this 1555-metre beast is, kids as young as 10 (min 120cm/4ft) can get on it. Just picture your little daredevils boasting to their friends about riding the longest zip wire in the UK! To be fair, anyone who has flown through the sky at speeds over 100mph is allowed bragging rights...
2. Go Ape
Even if you’ve never been to Go Ape, it’s safe to say that if you live in the UK, you must have heard the name. That’s because Go Ape has 33 locations in the UK (and counting!), which makes it the most accessible way to have a go at a zip line.
The other great thing about Go Ape is that it’s suitable for anyone. Each adults’ Tree Top Adventure has a Junior counterpart designed for small kids (from 1m tall), featuring an exciting high rope course, which of course, ends with a zip wire grand finale.
Your kids are over 13? Move to something a bit more extreme - try the heart-racing, 3km Zip Wire Trekking adventure over the Lake District.
3. PierZip - Bournemouth, Dorset
Here’s another zip wire in the UK worth putting on your bucket list! Hosted by Rock Reef, the PierZip in Bournemouth is the world’s first pier to shore zip line. The height restriction is 1.3m, so your 10-year-olds have a good chance of fitting the criteria (make sure you check their height before you go, though).
Since, it’s a dual zip wire, the family will have the chance to race each other in pairs on the 250-metre stretch over the water. A bit of healthy competition never hurts!
4. Adrenalin Quarry - Liskeard, Cornwall
Want to go wild? Well, the zip wire at Adrenalin Quarry will have you jumping off a 50-metre cliff and flying 490 metres over the flooded quarry, at speeds of over 40mph. It’s one picturesque and exhilaratingly terrifying ride!
This is another twin cables zip line, so you and another braveheart from your family can take the plunge together. We wonder, who will scream louder, you or the kids?
5. Treetop Trek - Manchester, Greater Manchester
Why do one zip wire when you can do 24 in the same experience?! The Zip Trek at Treetop Trek Manchester, will give you the chance to do just that. 15 metres high in the trees, you’ll have exactly 35 obstacles and 24 zip lines to conquer.
The kids can do the Junior (7+) course, while you and your older teens (16+) can hit the Adults course together. By the end of the whole ordeal, you will have done so much flying from tree to tree that you’ll feel like Tarzan!
6. Play Factore - Trafford Park, Greater Manchester
Been talking about riding a zip wire for ages but the weather forecast for the weekend suddenly changed for the worse? Now that you’ve got the kids all hyped up, we can’t let the temperamental British weather ruin your plans! Head straight to Play Factore - UK's largest indoor play centre, which features its very own indoor zip wire.
On Weekends, Bank Holidays and all School Holidays, young thrill-seekers (6 - 16), can fly across the building, while you stand underneath and watch them zoom by like proper superheroes!
7. ALTITUDE High Ropes - Bournemouth, Dorset
ALTITUDE is another Bournemouth-based attraction, which features a daring zip wire experience. This time you won’t be flying by the beach. Instead, you’ll be taking a plunge down the Climbing Tower for a 70-metre zip line ride across Littledown Lake.
Oops, we almost forgot to mention - in order to get to the zip wire, you’ll have to complete a 10-metre High Ropes course! You’ve got to love heights to do this one.
8. Conkers - Swadlincote, Derbyshire
Like the idea of a high ropes course with a zip wire treat at the end? Well, we’ve got another one! Set within 120 acres of woodland, Conkers offers a 10-obstacle, confidence building “Lo Ropes” course, followed by a 15-obstacle, daredevil “Hi Ropes” course 30ft in the air.
Once you successfully made it to the end, take the fun way down on the fast and furious 110-metre Zip Wire. It’s one last surge of adrenaline to round off the day!
9. Zip Now - London, Greater London
Here’s one that should sit on every adrenaline junkie’s bucket list! When it comes to city centre zip lines, Zip Now London is not only the fastest and longest zip wire in the UK, but in the entire world!
Flying 35 metres high above London on a 225-metre line, at a speed of up to 50 km/h, you’ll experience a whole new side of the capital. Who said sightseeing was boring?!
Zip Now London is open from around Easter till the end of the summer and tends to get really busy, so make sure you book early enough to guarantee you’ve got a spot. Kids must be at least 120 cm tall to do it and justifiably so - it is one exciting but absolutely horrifying ride!
10. Treerunners - Andover, Hampshire
Treerunners is all about zip lines, snowboards and tarzan swings. If you want to be hanging around with the family, having a good time up in the air, this is the place to be! There are two courses to choose from: Junior for kids over 6 (min 1.10m high) and Adult for anyone over 10 (min 1.40m high).
Not very daring yourself? The cool thing about Treerunners is that if you don’t share your kids’ enthusiasm for heights, you can let them take on the course on their own. Hold on to your camera and film your little adventurers fly on the zip wires. The videos can be used as boasting material for years to come!
11. BeWILDerwood - Wroxham, Norfolk
OK, we’ve got you and the slightly older kids sorted. But what about the tiny adventurers in the family? Due to health and safety reasons, the big, feisty zip wires in the UK are off limits for your tots. However, we think this list would not be complete without at least one place where the little ones can experience a zip wire ride fit for their size.
BeWILDerwood is a great location for a family day out, featuring magical creatures, story time, tree houses...and zip lines. These may not be the highest, the scariest, or the longest zip wires in the UK, but anyone, from small kids to their mums, is guaranteed to enjoy the ride!
Well, it seems like you’ve reached the end of the list. We believe these 11 zip wires in the UK have all it takes to satisfy even the wildest child (no matter how old or young they may be). Hopefully, you’ve found the perfect place to take it to the skies as a family. Fancy a challenge? Do all the zip lines on the list and tell us which one you loved most!
