Things To Do
One of the main draws of Wookey Hole is the cave system itself, which is open to visitors all year round. Guided tours are available, and visitors can explore the caves at their own pace. The caves are home to a variety of interesting rock formations and limestone caves. The caves are thought to have formed around 100 million years ago, and they have been used for a variety of purposes over the centuries, including as a source of limestone and as a home to early human settlers!
They were also rumoured to be the home of a legendary witch who was turned to stone by a monk who used holy water from the River Axe nearby. There is a large stalactite that is said to resemble a witch. Want to know something even more creepy? In 1912 the skeletal remains of a woman were found in a shallow grave, and buried with her were the remains of two goats, a bowl, a dagger, a latch lifter and an alabaster ball, all of which can now be seen in Wells Museum in their Balch room...
The caves also feature an underground river, which visitors can take a boat ride on, and a number of chambers that are filled with sparkling formations of stalactites and stalagmites.
