About Shepton Mallet Prison

Shepton Mallet Prison is one of the most extraordinary heritage attractions in the country - and one of the most authentic. Originally built in 1610 as a House of Correction under King James I, it went on to become the oldest working prison in the United Kingdom, finally closing its doors in 2013. Today, it stands exactly as it was when the last prisoners left - no reconstructions, no gimmicks, just the real thing.

Visitors can explore the prison through a range of experiences to suit all tastes. The Guided Tour takes you on a 90-minute journey through every corner of the site, led by expert guides with an encyclopaedic knowledge of its history. You'll walk the Victorian prison wings, step inside the condemned cell, visit the execution room where 25 men were put to death between 1889 and 1945, and uncover the prison's remarkable and largely secret role during World War II. For those who prefer to explore at their own pace, the Self-Guided Tour offers the freedom to roam the wings, exercise yard, Hard Labour Yard and original Gate Lodge with a visitor guide and map in hand.

Shepton Mallet

Shepton Mallet Prison isn't your average day out. With over 400 years of dark and dramatic history, this is a rare chance to walk the very wings, cells and corridors that once housed some of England's most dangerous criminals. From brutal punishments of the past to wartime secrets and infamous inmates, every corner of this remarkable building has a story to tell. Whether you're a history buff or simply curious, it's an experience that will stay with you long after you leave.

History brought to life in a genuinely atmospheric setting

There's no reconstruction here - this is the real thing. Shepton Mallet Prison is one of the oldest and best-preserved jails in the country, and exploring it feels unlike anything else. Guided by expert storytellers, you'll uncover the extraordinary tales of those who lived and worked within these walls, from Victorian prisoners and wartime executions to the American GIs stationed here during World War II. It's history that's gripping, thought-provoking and unlike anything you'll find in a museum.
