Why we recommend Ennerdale Water as a must visit for families
Beautiful Scenery
One of the unique features of Ennerdale Water is its status as one of the least developed lakes in the Lake District. This means that there are no major roads or buildings surrounding the lake, creating a sense of remoteness and serenity that is hard to find in other parts of the region. The lack of development and remote location also means that Ennerdale Water retains its natural beauty and remains relatively untouched by human influence, making it a truly special place to visit. It is the most westerly lake in the Lake District National Park.
Wildlife Spotting
The lake is also home to a variety of wildlife, including Black Galloway Cattle, red squirrels, otters, deer and a wide range of bird species. Birdwatchers will be delighted by the opportunity to spot rare and native birds such as ospreys and golden eagles in their natural habitat , while nature lovers can enjoy the sight of wildflowers and ancient trees along the shoreline.
Forest and Woodland
The multi-coloured Ennerdale Forest shows a dazzling tree display with different shades of greenery. The woodland and forests here in this West Lake District area are truly stunning, showing nature at its best.
Hiking Trails and Cycle Path
For those looking to explore the area further, there are numerous hiking trails and cycle paths that offer stunning views around the lake shore, forestry road and surrounding mountains. The Ennerdale Valley is also part of the Coast to Coast Walk, a popular long-distance trail that spans across northern England from the Irish Sea to the North Sea. In addition it is home to Wild Ennerdale, a project with 30 miles of traffic free paths making it ideal for walking or using bikes especially with children.
Lake and Fishing
Fishing is another popular activity at Ennerdale Water, with the lake known for its healthy population of trout. Anglers can enjoy a day out on the water, surrounded by the peaceful scenery of the lake and mountains.
Overall, Ennerdale Water is a hidden gem in the Lake District National Park, offering visitors a chance to escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life and immerse themselves in the beauty of nature. Whether you're looking to hike, fish, birdwatch, or simply relax by the water's edge, Ennerdale provides a peaceful and picturesque setting for outdoor adventures. With its unspoiled landscape and diverse wildlife, this glacial lake is a must-visit destination for anyone seeking tranquility and natural beauty in West Cumbria.
