Birthplace of William and Dorothy Wordsworth
Come and visit William and Dorothy's childhood home how it would have been when they lived there. Walk through the many interactive rooms and image the Wordsworth's playing games through the corridors. Try your hand at writing with a quill or play dress up in the children's bedroom. Find a fire burning in the kitchen and play lawn games in the garden where William's love of nature was first nurtured. When arriving, ask the welcome team about our children's trails which will take you searching for clues throughout the property.
Georgian walled garden, organically grown for pollinators and people.
The walled garden is a quiet oasis in the middle of Cockermouth. Grown using organic principles and with pollinators and other wildlife in mind, it boasts a wide variety of flowers, herbs and fruit trees which bring new interest and colour with the change of seasons. The spring brings an abundance of blossom and bright waving tulips and daffodils. Summer is the time for roses and romance as the heritage blooms cover bushes and walls. As summer moves to autumn, the trees become ladden with heritage apples and pears, damsons and cherries and swaying sneezeweed bring bright bursts of yellow. This is a paradise for children who love to walk the paths, sit on the lawn and wonder at the many bumblebees as they go from flower to flower. As they play traditional lawn games, this is a great place for secret garden themed photos.
