New For The Summer Holidays 2024
Experience the Summer of Circus, from 20th July to 1st September, 11:00 - 14:00, normal admission charge only.
Roll up, roll up! The circus comes to Hinton Ampner! Test your skills with hula hooping, circus yoga and wobbling on balance stones. On 31st July, 20th August and 28th August, you'll find circus performers from Storm in a Teacup, who will teach you amazing new talents, from plate spinning to juggling!
Activities are free with normal admission (free for National Trust members). No need to book.
Family Outdoor Theatre
The Tale of Jemima Puddle-Duck outdoor theatre, 9th & 16th August, 18:30 to 20:00, booking essential.

Hinton Ampner is more than just a beautiful garden; its charming Georgian-style country house has a fascinating history dating back to the 1790s. Families can wander through the sun-lit rooms and find out about Hinton’s past inhabitants.
The gardens and historic parkland at Hinton Ampner are a highlight for many visitors. The stunning gardens offer a riot of colour throughout the seasons, from spring daffodils to summer roses and dahlias. It's a garden for the seasons. You can even pick up a free rose leaflet and discover planting tips!
For kids, the gardens are a natural playground. Tall hedges and hidden paths are great for games of hide and seek. There’s a pretty fish pond, a quirky, mushroom-shaped topiary and in the kitchen garden, a friendly scarecrow and his little dog to say hello to.
You can go directly from the garden into Hinton’s charming old parkland, dotted with ancient trees. It’s the ideal space for bug hunts, picnics and general letting off-steam.
Food & Drink
Nothing beats a family picnic in the great outdoors, and Hinton Ampner provides plenty of picturesque spots to lay down a blanket and enjoy a meal together. The rolling lawns and shaded areas under ancient trees create a perfect setting for a leisurely lunch.
The on-site café also offers a selection of sandwiches, light lunches, cakes, and hot and cold drinks - perfect picnic food, in fact. Look out for baked goodies like lemon drizzle cake too, and classic fruit scones as well as savoury AND sweet cream teas. There are also freshly baked pastries.

The historic house has step-free access to the ground floor, with portable ramps available upon request for further accessibility. Additionally, there are accessible toilets and baby-changing facilities on site. The friendly and helpful staff are always on hand to assist with any special requirements, ensuring that every family can explore and enjoy Hinton Ampner with ease.

Adventure Awaits in the Enchanted Gardens
Hinton Ampner’s garden is divided into outdoor spaces with tall hedges and hidden paths, making it a fun place for kids to explore. There’s a quirky topiary, lots of lawns to run and play on, and a big parkland full of ancient trees for climbing up and even into! Pick up the ancient tree trail to find them all, or for slightly older children, there’s the Stewkeley trail – a 1.9km circular walk across the estate. Perfect for adventurers and nature lovers!
Hunt For Treasures in the House
Inside the house are beautiful rooms that contain exquisite ceramics and art, with views across the gardens. Find out about the fire that burned the house down in 1960, discover the life of former owner Ralph Dutton, and pick up an I-Spy booklet that will take kids on a hunt for treasures within Hinton’s collection!

The on-site café serves hot food from 12:00 - 14:30. They have a range of gluten- and dairy-free food available, as well as soya or oat milk.

The closest train station is Winchester which is 9 miles away. Petersfield is 10 miles away and Alresford is 4 miles away.
By Bus
You can catch the number 67 Stagecoach bus from Winchester to Petersfield via Alredsford. There is no Sunday service though, so please keep that in mind.
