Attraction Information
Winchester Cathedral boasts a fascinating history, glimpses of which can be discovered as you explore the building. You'll find animals and beasts carved in stone and wood, mortuary chests containing the bones of Anglo Saxon kings and medieval stained glass shattered by Oliver Cromwell's troops. Walking through the length of the Cathedral's vast nave, looking up at the impressive vaulted ceiling is an experience that all ages will enjoy.
The children's trail brings the Cathedral to life in a fun and active way that helps keep kids interested, attendant and moving! Copies are available to pick up from the Cathedral free of charge or you can download them in advance and print them out!
Cathedral Tours are available free of charge and offer a great introduction for everyone over about 8 or 9 years old to the Cathedral, its history and treasures. Hear all about Winchester during Anglo-Saxon times and just how much changed when the Normans invaded, plus the many characters and events that have shaped the history of England and significantly left their mark on this magnificent building!
For older children, it's worth considering booking a tower tour. They carry an additional charge and a minimum age requirement of 12 years but climbing the turret, seeing the bell chamber, panoramic views from the top and a walk through the huge nave roof is an impressive experience that almost all kids enjoy the thrill of! Plus explore the crypt and in better weather the historic Inner Close too, to get a well-rounded experience of this historic building!
