Whinlatter Forest features the Whinlatter WildPlay Trail: 9 very different and exciting play areas direct your adventurous journey through the forest with highlights including a climbing wall, stunning water feature, cool giant swings and a toddler play area with secret paths! Shhh!
The forest has walking trails of varying lengths to suit all abilities, giving you lovely views ideal for family photos, stretching from Bassenthwaite Lake and Derwent Water, to Skiddaw, Grisedale Pike and Helvellyn.
You can even find the Gruffalo and Gruffalo’s Child on the Gruffalo orienteering course. It's common to encounter wildlife such as red squirrels, woodland birds and deer so keep your eye out, maybe even take binoculars! This is also the base for the worthwhile Lake District Osprey Project which runs April to September.
Active families can try the Altura or Quercus mountain bike trails, which make full use of the stunning mountain setting to give you a challenging but pleasingly satisfying ride experience.
Or if you've got a head for heights, swing through the trees on the Go-Ape course, which has its own listing easy to find if you go back a page!
The team at the Visitor Centre and Forest Shop can help you plan your day and sell forest maps, and you can refresh yourselves in the Siskins Cafe, with great views of Grisedale Pike from its balcony.
Cyclewise is the onsite bike shop and hires out a variety of metal mounts as well as selling a range of them too and relevant kit. For older types who can handle it they are also running mountain bike training courses from here! Pick up some mad skills today!
