Knettishall Heath Country Park
Thetford, NorfolkAbout Knettishall Heath Country Park
Knettishall Heath Country Park In summer it can feel like another country: common (yet still exciting!) lizards bask in the open on rocks, skylarks sing above the gently swaying grasses and ponies and cattle graze within a stone's throw (don't throw stones!), offering a truly peaceful family day out. How often do you get one of those!? You may be lucky enough to see roe and fallow deer in the woods and the area is generally festooned with white admiral butterflies. On the heath and meadows, you may get to spot the herd of semi wild Exmoor ponies, usually bombling along together. These ponies are descended from Britain's natural wild pony of 130,000 years ago! Because of them and the nesting birds March through July, dogs are never allowed to be off the lead if you bring them along. Parts of this reserve are accessible by pushchair, wheelchair and mobility scooter but can occasionally be muddy in winter.
