Attraction Currently Closed

As a result of the ongoing Coronavirus outbreak, all pay-for-entry English Heritage sites will be closed to the public from the end of Wednesday 18th March until 1st May. Some sites may re-open early. Free-to-enter sites will remain open to visitors. We'll keep this updated with news of opening/closure changes, but always recommend to check before you travel.

Don't worry - you can find lots more great days out in Thetford, or you can browse days out all over the UK here.

Attraction Information

At Grimes Graves today, visitors (10+) can descend 9 metres (30 ft) by ladder into one excavated shaft, an unforgettable experience: the only Neolithic flint mine open to visitors in Britain. A grassy lunar landscape of over 400 shafts, pits, quarries and spoil dumps

Visitors can use a hard hat and descend into one of the shafts to see the radiating galleries at the bottom and the marks made by the antler picks of the original miners.

Try to catch one of the flint-knapping demonstrations (with the knapper in costume wearing only animal skins!).

Plus the small exhibition area illustrates the history of this fascinating site.
