The Scarborough Spa Express
Carnforth, LancashireAbout The Scarborough Spa Express
While there are plenty of differing trips available, the charming vintage steam engines at the Scarborough Spa Express are perfect for a family trip, what nicer way to enjoy North Yorkshire's glorious countryside and make a trip to the historic city of York or the seaside town of Scarborough, than by traveling on a vintage steam hauled train?
These majestic trains with large picture windows ideal for touring steam out of York in the morning on a circular route calling at Normanton, Wakefield Kirkgate, Wakefield Westgate, Woodlesford, Castleford arriving in York then on to Scarborough, picking up passengers at Knaresborough, Harrogate, and Leeds, before heading back to York and on to Scarborough.
Some of the many highlights include crossing over the magnificent viaduct over the River Nidd in Knaresborough, and passing the beautiful ruins of Kirkham Priory, near Castle Howard. There is a buffet on every train offering hot and cold snacks and drinks, so it's a charming service on which to relax with your family.
You could also consider the Jacobite run from Fort William to Mallaig, which run May through October and so is a bit more accessible, season wise! Plus, the Dalesman runs Settle to Carlisle May through August, and seasonal specials take over for Christmas, so whatever time of year you want to go, so long as you plan (and book!) ahead, you're good!
