Powis Castle and Garden - National Trust
Welshpool, PowysAbout Powis Castle and Garden - National Trust
Visit Powis Castle, one of the most beautiful medieval castles in Wales. Built by Welsh princes, the castle has been remodelled many times over the years. With an amazing collection of paintings, sculptures, furniture, and tapestries, you might be surprised at what you find.
Christmas at Powis Castle
This festive season, step into a world of enchantment at Powis Castle, where the first floor has been transformed into a magical winter wonderland.
Feel the icy magic of the season as you explore the grand State Rooms, which have been reimagined into a shimmering landscape of frost and fantasy. Twinkling lights and ornate decorations will guide you through an immersive, story-like realm brought to life. Keep an eye out for the tiny mice dressed for their own wintry adventure — little ones will love spotting them along the way.
For an extra touch of sparkle, visit after dark from 12–22 December to see dazzling light projections dance across the castle’s medieval walls, or join Father Christmas for breakfast in the Bodley Stables on selected days (booking essential).
Things To Do At Powis Castle
Take a trip to the medieval Powis Castle. Perched on a hilltop overlooking Welshpool and the green Welsh fields, it offers stunning views of the region. Delve into the castle's rich history with a quick tour of its interior, and spend the rest of your visit in the beautiful gardens. It's a great place to enjoy a breath of fresh air with your family.
Indian Collection
Did you know that The Clive Museum hold the UK's most significant collections of Indian objects? Located inside the castle, the museum will take you on a journey into the past, back to the 17th-19th century. Enter the mysterious world of India and the Far East, with more than 300 items and Asian artefacts from ivories, a collection of paintings, textiles and Hindu gods statues. You'll also find silver and gold, weapons and ceremonial armour.
Gardens
Time to go out and enjoy the garden! Powis Castle has marvellous Grade I listed gardens, including 17th-century Italianate terraces with gigantic clipped yews and an Edwardian Formal Garden. The Edwardian Formal Garden has century-old apple trees, rose beds, and a woodland area! Not to mention stunning flower borders, awe-inspiring topiary and incredible views! Go for a stroll, enjoy the fresh air and shed away the stress of everyday life. Try to jump as high as the 30ft high, cloud-like yew trees, race each other along the herbaceous borders or spot deer in the deer park.
No matter the season, the kids will love running around the Powis Castle gardens. There are also plenty of family-friendly National Trust events and activities throughout the year—don't miss out!
Whether it's a world-class collection of artefacts and furniture or the ancient dramatic terraces and trees in the gardens, there's so much to explore at Powis Castle.
"It's such a beautiful castle and gardens to walk around. Nice friendly staff all around the castle to ask questions. Great views and some beautiful flowers. I would recommend to anyone wanting a lovely trip out." Charlie
