Whitewater Active
Llangollen, DenbighshireAbout Whitewater Active
Whitewater Active is one of North Wales' longest-running outdoor activity centres, based on the banks of the River Dee in the heart of Llangollen. Operating since 2007, they offer nine guided adventures - white water rafting, river bugs, gorge walking, canyoning, rock climbing, abseiling, open canoeing, mountain biking and the spectacular Pontcysyllte Aqueduct canoe tour - all with kit included and qualified, first-aid-trained instructors on hand throughout.
Sessions run seven days a week, last between two and five and a half hours, and start from just £50 per person. Most activities welcome children from age 8 with no upper age limit, making this a genuinely brilliant option for families, groups of friends, school trips, stag and hen parties, and corporate team days alike. Kids and parents share the same raft, so everyone gets stuck in together.
The centre sits directly above the River Dee on Bridge Street in Llangollen, and is handily placed for visitors travelling from Chester (30 minutes), Manchester and Liverpool (around an hour) and Birmingham (two hours). After your session, heated changing rooms and showers are right on-site. Then it's just a short walk downstairs to Riverbanc - an on-site specialty coffee shop and brunch spot with a deck overlooking the rapids, featured in the Indy Coffee Guide. Making a weekend of it? The seven-bedroom boutique hotel above the centre has doubles, triples and family rooms from £120 per night, breakfast included. Eat, sleep and adventure without moving your car.
Whitewater Active is licensed by the Adventure Activities Licensing Authority (AALA) and all instructors hold relevant National Governing Body (NGB) qualifications. They have also been featured by Visit Wales, Go North Wales and named in the Top 100 Attractions.
