The House on Crutches Museum
Bishops Castle, ShropshireAbout The House on Crutches Museum
The House on Crutches Museum tells the story of the unique town of Bishop's Castle, using a variety of displays and temporary exhibition in a series of themed rooms. The kitchen is the first room that you enter, and will give kids a chance to learn about domestic life, including washday! There are also some costumes for them to try on. Learn about the history of local businesses in the Town Room, plus interesting information about brewing, clothing, and clog and shoemaking. A collection of medical equipment will show kids the amazing changes that have taken place with medicine.
Discover how difficult agriculture was when people had to do everything themselves instead of using a machine in the Agricultural Room, which has a great collection of tools that were used around the home and farm. The Parlour holds a collection of domestic pastimes and children's toys from the 19th century, which includes a cabinet of small and miniature toys to discover.
This is a fascinating museum (with supporting stilts!), that is free to visit and staffed by a team of enthusiastic volunteers who love to share their knowledge. The museum has restricted opening times because it is run by volunteers, so please check online to ensure it is open when you want to visit.
