About Deal Castle
Nestled along the picturesque Kent coastline, Deal Castle stands as a captivating testament to England's rich maritime history, offering a perfect day out for families looking to combine education with adventure!
Built by Henry VIII in the 16th century as part of his coastal defence program, this flower-shaped fortress invites visitors of all ages to explore its well-preserved walls, dark passages, and scenic surroundings.
A Journey Through History
Deal Castle's architecture is a marvel in itself, designed to withstand cannon fire, it now serves as a fascinating educational tool for families.
Walking through its halls, children and adults alike can immerse themselves in tales of the Tudors and the castle's role in defending the realm against potential invasions.
The hands-on exhibits and informative displays make history come alive, offering insights into the lives of those who manned this fortress through the centuries.
Did you know Deal Castle was one of the largest coastal forts from Henry VIII's time? Also, the outer walls were rounded off to provide more strength and protection against cannon fire - which is pretty clever! They were even built with 200 cannons and gun ports and the circular keep is surrounded by 6 circular bastions and outer bastions too - talk about tight defences!
The castle was also protected by a dry, stone-lined moat and murder holes... Which you can imagine, were quite terrible!

What makes Deal Castle a must-visit destination for families is its versatility in being a fun and educational attraction to visit. The grounds are perfect for a leisurely picnic, while the castle itself is a maze of discovery.
Children will love venturing into the dark tunnels, climbing the battlements, and imagining themselves as knights or princesses! Deal Castle's layout also encourages exploration, with hidden nooks and crannies that promise adventure at every turn...
From the central tower, circular tower and bastion walls to the miles of winding paths! There's lots of family fun to be had at this family attraction - especially if you love history!
