Sutton Hoo
Woodbridge, SuffolkAbout Sutton Hoo
Sutton Hoo is home to one of the most important archaeological discoveries of all time. Discover tales of mysterious mounds and buried treasure, dress up like an archaeologist - or a king - and find out what life was like for the Anglo-Saxons centuries ago.
Inside Tranmer House, you can find out what it's really like to be an archaeologist on the eve of a discovery, make your own models in the Discovery Room and travel back in time to the 1930s, with our archive of images from the world-famous dig.
Outside, Sutton Hoo has miles of trails to explore, as well as an adventure playground filled with fun. Immerse yourself in nature, look out for birds and beasties and even build your very own Anglo-Saxon den as you explore the estate - and don't forget to climb to the top of the 17m viewing tower, where you can get a bird's eye view over the historic Burial Ground.
Join us for Summer of Play from 18 July-2 September 2026, where you can train like a warrior in our play arena, challenge friends and family to a hobby horse race or get creative with craft activities inspired by history and nature. Whatever the weather, we'll have something for everyone, with free activities indoors, outside and plenty of places to pause when you need to. There’s so much for all ages to do at Sutton Hoo this summer, no matter how you like to play.
All activities are free with admission to Sutton Hoo, but some do require pre-booking in advance - click the link to our website to find out more.
We have everything you need for a great day out
At Sutton Hoo, we've got loads to keep little explorers busy, from indoor activities to adventures in the great outdoors.
Try on a sword and shield for size or climb to the top of the viewing tower for a bird's eye view of the Royal Burial Ground. Get crafty in the Discovery Room, dress up like an archaeologist or go bird-watching and bug-hunting on a walk through the woodland and along the river.
Find the perfect souvenir in our well-stocked gift shop or stop for a pitstop in our on-site cafe which serves a tasty selection of food and drink throughout the day.
