Prior Park Landscape Garden
One of only four Palladian bridges of this design in the world can be crossed at Prior Park, which was created in the 18th century by local entrepreneur Ralph Allen, with advice from 'Capability' Brown and the poet Alexander Pope.
The garden is set in a sweeping valley where visitors can enjoy magnificent views of Bath. Having recently undergone a major restoration project to restore the dams around the lower lakes, visitors can once again walk between the upper and middle lake and over the Palladian Bridge, gazing up to Ralph Allen's mansion house that sits above the garden. Bring a picnic and enjoy a peaceful lunch in the sunshine or spend time with your family running through the Pasture. The Tea Cabin situated by the lower lake is open every day serving refreshements and snacks. A five minute walk leads to the Bath Skyline, a six mile circular route encompassing beautiful woodlands and meadows, an Iron Age hill fort, Roman settlements, 18th century follies and spectacular views.
Note: mansion house not part of the garden (not National Trust). There are steep slopes, steps and uneven paths in the garden.
One of only four Palladian Bridges in the world
Built in 1755 inspired by Italian architect Andrea Palladio, the Palladian Bridge at Prior Park is one of only four bridges of this design in the world. It is an iconic location in the city of Bath and features a dam underneath as it sits over lakes on a hillside.
A landscaped garden
Originally created in the 1700s by Ralph Allen, Prior Park is great example of a landscape garden. Designed to work within the existing landscape it features winding paths, hidden features and views over Bath.
