Northampton Museum and Art Gallery tells the story of Northampton's history from the Stone Age to present day using objects, sound, and film. Outstanding collections of decorative and fine arts (including Oriental ceramics and Italian paintings), plus an amazing amount of shoes (over 12,000)! It's also free to visit.
The museum reflects the town's standing as the boot and shoe capital of Britain, with 2 galleries that take you into a world of shoes! The ‘Life and Sole' exhibition shows the history of shoe-making from Egyptian times to present day, with a recreation of an old shoe factory, audiovisual displays, and interactive exhibits. The story of footwear continues in the ‘Followers of Fashion' display.
Discover more about local history in the archaeology section, the arts, and more through the permanent galleries, changing exhibitions, and various events that the museum plays host to, which are designed so that visitors of all ages will enjoy exploring them!
