About Lindisfarne Castle - National Trust

Perched on the stunning Holy Island, Lindisfarne Castle is like stepping into a real-life fairytale. With its rich history, breathtaking views, and a sense of adventure around every corner, this National Trust site is the perfect destination for a family day out.

If you're looking for a place where kids and grown-ups can explore, learn, and have fun together, Lindisfarne Castle should definitely be on your list. Why not visit during the summer holidays? Did you also know it's one of the most iconic landmarks in the UK?

History of Lindisfarne Castle

Imagine wandering through a castle that's over 400 years old, where every stone has a story to tell. That's exactly what you'll experience at Lindisfarne Castle! Built in the 16th century, this historic fortress is like a giant time machine that takes you back to the days of knights, kings and queens.

Explore The Rich History

Lindisfarne Castle is a treasure trove of history waiting to be discovered by curious minds. As your family walks through the castle’s ancient stone corridors, you’ll be transported back to the 16th century, a time when the castle served as a defensive stronghold against invasions.

The kids will be fascinated by the tales of knights, battles, and secret smuggler routes, all brought to life through engaging displays and knowledgeable guides.

Discover A Tidal Adventure

Did you know the castle is located on Holy Island, which is only accessible by a causeway at low tide?

This tidal crossing adds an extra layer of excitement to your adventure! Timing your visit to coincide with the low tide means you’ll be driving or walking across the seabed, which can feel like stepping into another world.

Soak In The Stunning Views

Perched high on a volcanic mound, Lindisfarne Castle boasts some of the most breathtaking views in the UK. From the castle’s battlements, your family can take in the sweeping panoramas of the North Sea, the rolling hills of Northumberland, and the picturesque Holy Island landscape. The sight of the tide ebbing and flowing around the island adds a magical quality to the experience!
