History of Lindisfarne Castle
Imagine wandering through a castle that's over 400 years old, where every stone has a story to tell. That's exactly what you'll experience at Lindisfarne Castle! Built in the 16th century, this historic fortress is like a giant time machine that takes you back to the days of knights, kings and queens.
Kids will be captivated by the tales of battles, secret tunnels, and life inside the castle walls. The friendly guides are great at making history come alive with fun facts and exciting stories that will keep little ones engaged. Plus, there are lots of interactive displays that make learning about the past a hands-on experience. It's a fantastic way to introduce your children to history in an educational and entertaining way.
This impressive castle was converted by famed architect Sir Edwin Lutyens into a private holiday home for Edward Hudson - the founder of Country Life magazine! That's a pretty cool fact!
Things To Do
Once you've explored the inside of the castle, it's time to head outside and let the kids run wild! The castle grounds are perfect for outdoor fun, with plenty of space for the kids to play and explore. The gardens are a real highlight, bursting with colourful flowers and lush green lawns that are just begging for a family picnic.
The Gertrude Jekyll Garden, which was once an old walled garden, was designed by a famous landscape gardener. It's a lovely spot to take a stroll and introduce your kids to the beauty of nature. Spread out a blanket, enjoy some snacks, and take in the stunning views of the castle and the sea beyond. The fresh air and open spaces are sure to inspire lots of imaginative play and maybe even a game of hide and seek!
Plus, there's a beautiful summer-flowering garden designed by Gertrude Jekyll that you need to explore!
If your family loves the great outdoors and country life, Lindisfarne Castle is surrounded by a natural paradise. Holy Island, where the castle is located, is a haven for wildlife, making it a brilliant place for young explorers. Bring along a pair of binoculars and see if you can spot some of the island's many seabirds or even a grey seal lounging on the rocks.
A walk along the island's rugged coastline is a must for families with older kids. The breathtaking views are a great way to explore the island's natural beauty up close. The castle's location offers a perfect vantage point to take in the surrounding landscape, with sweeping views that stretch out to the horizon.
One of the coolest things about visiting Lindisfarne Castle on Holy Island is the journey to get there. The mysterious tidal island is only accessible at low tide, so you can only reach it by crossing a dramatic causeway that's sometimes underwater! This adds an extra layer of excitement to your day out and makes the trip feel like a real adventure.
Crossing the causeway is an experience your kids will remember. Watching the tide go out and the road appear from beneath the water is like watching magic happen right before your eyes. It's a great opportunity to teach your kids about tides and the amazing power of nature while having fun along the way.
During the summer, why not enjoy beautiful shoreline walks? Or explore the grandeur of the 19th-century lime kilns.
