Alnwick Castle Grounds are a magical adventure for kids of all ages. There’s plenty of space to run, explore, and imagine knights and dragons in the historic setting. In Artisans Courtyard young visitors can try their hand at medieval skills, while costumed performers bring history to life with fun, interactive storytelling. The expansive lawns, towers, and secret corners offer endless opportunities for play and discovery.

On weekends and during school holidays, our Family Friendly History tour offers young visitors a chance to explore Alnwick Castle's history in a fun, 30-minute session.

Opening Times

Alnwick Castle is open seasonally from spring to autumn. For 2026, the castle is open daily during the main season and closes on 22 October 2026. Standard opening hours are usually 10am - 5pm, with some areas and last-entry times varying by attraction area.

The castle grounds are generally open 10am-5pm, with last entry at 3:45pm. The State Rooms usually open 10:30am-4:30pm, with last entry at 4pm, and individual areas may have different opening times.

Transport Information

By Bus:

There are Arriva bus stops and a bus station in the centre of Alnwick that will bring you to the castle. The X15, X18 and X20 buses all run from Newcastle, departing from and via the city's Haymarket bus station. It is approximately a five minute walk to the castle from the bus station.

By Train:

The East Coast mainline stops at the nearest station Alnmouth. This is 4 miles from the castle.

By Car:

Just off the A1, you can find Alnwick Castle if you follow the postcode NE66 1YU, which takes you to the shared car park.
