These unique Dolaucothi Gold Mines in are set amid the deeply wooded hillsides overlooking the beautiful Cothi Valley, so you're surrounded by gorgeous walks for whenever you're done with the gold rush!
2,000 years ago, the Romans left behind a glimpse of their gold-mining methods. The harsh mining environment continued in the 19th and 20th centuries, ending in 1938. Expertly guided historical tours take you back to experience the conditions of the Roman, Victorian and 1930s underground workings: really fascinating stuff! Most kids' imaginations are really spurred by the idea of folks working underground so it's a great time to slip the secret schooling in!
See and hear the old 1930s mine and mine machinery. Have a go at gold panning and take the opportunity to experience the frustrations of searching for real gold! It's great fare for the imagination and makes great material for an extra credit project for school!
Please note, underground tours involve steep slopes, stout footwear is essential and serious consideration should be given to whether under 4s would enjoy it as it's naturally very enclosed.
