About Buckland Abbey

Got little history buffs? At Buckland Abbey in Devon, you’ll discover over 700 years of history wrapped up in the beautiful abbey and estate packed full of loads of little treasures.

Alongside the stunning abbey and estate, there’s also loads of lovely outdoor spaces, why not head off on a family walk and see what wildlife you can spot? Don’t forget to make a trip to the Higher Paddock, where you’ll find balance beams, loads of awesome natural play, and even den building!

Venture indoors and discover the house, you’ll gasp at the tiled floor of the great hall, close your eyes and imagine yourself as a monk, servant, or even sailor as you pass through.

Walking in the footsteps of adventurers

As you wander around Buckland Abbey, you'll discover fascinating tales spanning eight centuries. It’s been home to Cistercian monks, and seafarers who changed the shape of the house and the fate of the country. The Abbey is part museum, part house, and filled with treasures to discover. With gardens perfect for picnics and beautiful estate walks to explore, there's plenty here for all ages to enjoy.

Home of Sir Francis Drake

Sir Francis Drake was an Elizabethan Hero, Sea Captain, Privateer and Slave Trader. He was the first Englishman to circumnavigate the globe and was able to purchase Buckland Abbey using a fraction of the treasure from the voyage.

Year round fun

Come rain or shine, there's always lots to see and do at Buckland Abbey. Whether it's joining in with outdoor games in the summer, being dazzled by Christmas displays in the Great Barn or simply splashing in puddles, every visit brings a new adventure. Look out for special events too such as craft days and seasonal trails.
