You can also chug along a half-mile circuit through the beautiful gardens of Brookside Garden Centre!
The History
The Brookside Miniature Railway has a rich history dating back to its establishment in 1949. It was originally built by the well-known model engineer Mr Alan Keef, who had a passion for creating intricate and realistic miniature trains.
One of the main highlights of the Brookside Miniature Railway is its impressive collection of steam, diesel, and electric locomotives. These meticulously crafted replicas of famous train models from different eras offer a unique and authentic experience for railway enthusiasts. The attention to detail is remarkable, with carefully replicated features such as whistles, smoke, and intricate interior designs. Each locomotive has its own character and story, adding a touch of whimsy to the overall experience!
The railway began as a 5-inch gauge railway in 1972, but changed to its present gauge in 1989, with the railway extending in 1999, and again in 2007! The trains are pulled by a variety of internal combustion and steam engines. They run from the 4 platform country station, called Brookside Central, and then take you on a broad circuit of the lovely gardens, crossing over 3 bridges, and through 2 tunnels! Fantastic fun for the whole family!
It also has an authentic GWR station, a full-size Midland Railway signal box, and a museum of railway relics and memorabilia, so there is plenty to keep you and the kids entertained. There is also a picnic area, restaurant garden, and gift shops to enjoy, plus a large Aquatic Centre, and 2 Drive your own Tram tracks on site.
Things To Do
As visitors step aboard the miniature trains, they embark on a delightful journey through the beautifully landscaped gardens of the Brookside Garden Centre. The railway winds its way through lush greenery, meandering around scenic ponds, charming bridges, and carefully crafted miniature villages.
The journey on the Brookside Miniature Railway is a super fun experience that caters to all age groups. Children are particularly captivated by the magic of the trains as they ride alongside their favourite characters, such as Thomas the Tank Engine and his friends. The excitement on their faces as they wave to onlookers and pass through tunnels is truly priceless! For adults, the railway offers a nostalgic trip down memory lane, evoking the joy and wonder of childhood train rides.
Aside from the joy of riding on miniature trains, the Brookside Miniature Railway also offers a range of additional attractions and activities. Visitors can enjoy exploring the beautifully maintained gardens, which are a testament to the dedication and passion of the gardeners. There are also picnic areas where families can relax and enjoy a meal amidst the serene surroundings.
