The Runway Visitor Park
Altrincham, Greater ManchesterAbout The Runway Visitor Park
If you're searching for a day out to entertain the whole family, look no further than the Runway Visitor Park. Located in Manchester, this unique attraction is a fantastic trip for kids fascinated by flight and aircraft enthusiasts! With raised viewing mounds offering a clear 180-degree view over the airfield, you can see some of the 600 daily aircraft movements!
Things To Do
Runway Visitor Park is a dream destination for aviation enthusiasts, but it's also much more than that. It's an interactive, engaging place where families can learn, explore, and have fun together.
Watch Planes Up Close
One of the biggest draws of the Runway Visitor Park is the chance to see planes up close on the busy runways. The park is next to Manchester Airport's runway, giving visitors a front-row seat to watch planes take off and land. The thrill of seeing a massive aircraft soar into the sky or touch down on the tarmac never gets old – especially for young children fascinated by all things that fly!
With picnic areas strategically placed near the runway, you can enjoy your lunch while watching the busy airport in action. It's a unique experience that will leave kids wide-eyed with wonder and provide great photo opportunities for the family album.
Explore Historic Aircraft
For families who love a bit of history, the Runway Visitor Park offers a chance to explore some iconic aircraft. The highlight is undoubtedly the Concorde. As one of the fastest and most famous aircraft in history to have ever been built, the Concorde tour is an absolute must-do. Kids will be amazed at the sleek design, and adults will appreciate the chance to relive a piece of aviation history.
There is a range of amazing tours where you can explore huge aircraft and gain a deeper insight into some of the most famous planes. The iconic Concorde G-BOAC aircraft was, of course, BA's supersonic airliner, which you can explore in person (booking essential); those over 1.2m can also tour the decommissioned Nimrod patrol and attack aircraft. Plus, you can hop on board either the DC-10, Avro RJX, or Trident free of charge on weekends!
Interactive Experiences for Kids
At the Runway Visitor Park, it's not just about watching and learning – it's about getting hands-on, too. The park regularly hosts family-friendly events and interactive activities designed to keep children engaged and excited.
The flight simulator, Fly 360, is a fascinating experience that allows kids to fly their own aircraft! They'll experience what it's like to be a pilot, whether it's on a fighter plane or another impressive aircraft. There are also special educational workshops that teach about the science of flight and even the Flight Academy - there's plenty to do for kids. The visitor's park also has an outdoor play area where younger kids can burn off some energy while parents relax nearby. With trampolines, treasure hunts and seasonal activities like miniature railways and bouncy castles - your kids will have an amazing time!
Keep an eye out for special events like open cockpit days, where kids can climb inside a real aircraft and pretend they're flying high above the clouds. These unique experiences make the Runway Visitor Park stand out as a family-friendly attraction.
Food & Drink
The Runway Visitor Park is designed with families in mind, so they have lots of family-friendly facilities. Like their RVP Cafe! They serve a range of hot and cold food, food on the go, hot drinks and even ice cream on the weekends!
You can bring your own picnic or enjoy a meal at the park's café, which serves everything from sandwiches and snacks to hot meals and drinks.
Gift Shop
Remember to visit the Aviation Shop, where you can purchase a range of plane-themed souvenirs to take home to remind you of this amazing experience! Like model planes, uniforms and the latest technology in the aircraft industry!
The only fees are for parking, but you can get in completely free if you saddle up and arrive via the family-friendly Airport Orbital Cycleway.
