There's no excuse to stay indoors, especially in the glorious Summer months when there are beautiful gardens like Arley Arboretum to explore! The Arboretum is surrounded by over 1600 acres of countryside within the picturesque village of Upper Arley beside the river Severn, making it a magical family day out.
This impressive garden is home to Britain’s longest Laburnum arch (65m) and is also known for its impressive collection of exotic and indigenous pants. It has over 300 species of trees dating back over 350 years, an Italian renaissance garden, magnificent water fountains and a charming tea room to kick back in after a day or tree-spotting and exploring.
The Stunning Gardens
Ever walked under a living arch? Sheltered and sunny, the Magnolia Garden is a magical place in spring. Follow the curving path to a low box border where you'll find the perfect setting for the stunning display of Magnolias, from pure white through to pink, low forms and tall trees. There are few sights more impressive than the Arley Magnolia Garden in full blossom. For a few magical weeks in spring it is unmissable!
Once you've finished marvelling at the beautiful Magnolia Garden, head to the Italian Garden. This majestic garden is the idyllic spot for a bit of peace and tranquility. The garden has formal plantings, grand water features, a temple and dovecote help make the peaceful walled Italian Garden a very special place within the arboretum. Can you spot the mistletoe hanging from the Lime Trees? this breathtaking garden was styled to match the 15th century villas in Rome and Florence, making a truly magical place to take the kids - they'll feel as if they are Marquis' and Marquesses' of Arely.
Keep your eye out for all of the special species of trees that have been planted in Arely Garden. Whether you have your foot firmly in the gardeners world or you are history buff, you'll be fascinated strolling through the gardens spotting trees like the 'Whitty Pear' which were brought to England & Wales by the Romans! These rare trees grow tiny little apple/pear-shaped fruit in autumn, with leaves in summer. Curious about what trees grew in the UK before the Ice Age? Introducing the Monkey Puzzle Tree... You can find this tree more commonly is South American countries like Chile but it was an indigenous tree here in the UK before the Ice Age hit! These trees also have edible seeds, would you try one?
Interactive Trail & Adventure Trails
Other than exploring nature herself, Arley Arboretum run lots of exciting interactive trails designed for kids aged 3-16. Each trail has been made to connect kids with nature while also encouraging them to uncover all the wonders of the Arboretum. This year's annual trail marks the Mighty Minibeast Trail. Children are invited to spot real life critters as they follow the trail, think about describing words and answer questions based on our child friendly information boards. There are also seasonal trails too which you should keep your eyes and ears alert for.
It's important to mention that most trails are included in admission prices and have no prize. Any trail that is an additional cost will have a prize, these type of trails are usually seasonal.
Special Events
Arely House & Gardens host lots of exciting events for families such as the Plant Hunters’ Fair, where you can find great value, top quality, traditionally grown plants for every type of garden. Looking for something less-shoppy and more fun? The kids will love the big picnic kids party at the Arboretum and the Arley Adventurer Clubs. Would you brave the maze? Arley Arboretum host a mysterious maze session Arboretum, make your way to the middle & back out again, can't be too hard right...?
At Christmas time, you can enjoy a whole range of festive family fun! The arboretum opens its garden gates for Santa and his elves in the Santa's Grotto at Arley Arboretum.
Garden Tea Room
Spotting critters, climbing trees, and racing each other through Britain’s longest Laburnum arch really takes it out of you doesn't it? Refuel on freshly prepared food, homemade cakes, snacks and choose from a wide selection of drink options (hot & cold). If it's a hot day why not chow down on some creamy locally produced ice cream? The garden Tea Room sells Worcester's finest, Bennetts Farmhouse Luxury Ice Cream!
Bring gran and grandad along for afternoon tea while you're at it! Who doesn't love a cream tea in the sunshine with endless views of wild blooming flowers and tall green trees?
