Pevensey Castle
Pevensey, East SussexAbout Pevensey Castle
English Heritage sites are beautiful places to visit. You'll learn more about the history, what makes them amazing and discover new places! Pevensey Castle is one of them. Set in the beautiful East Sussex, this castle has a history spanning back 16 centuries! Oh wow!
Pevensey Castle History
In the 4th century, it stood tall and proud as one of the last strongest Roman 'Saxon Shore' forts. It was built as a defence against Saxon pirates! Did you know two-thirds of the walls still stand to this day? It's also famously known as the landing place of William the Conqueror's army in 1066. When he went set sail from France to challenge Harold Godwinson for the Crown of England.
William the Conqueror had built a wooden castle within the ruins of the Roman stone ruins of Pevensey Castle. With wooden bridges, and medieval defences like catapult balls and more on the outer walls and inner courtyard.
Things To Do
Who said there's nothing to do at a 16th-century-old castle? You can climb the incredible battlements, climb the spiral staircase, wander the Sussex countryside and head down to the dungeon and basement. With huge grounds, big enough for anyone to roam in, it's the perfect place for a leisurely walk with the family or your dogs! You can also discover the castle's moats and gaze at the preserved architecture on the walls.
After you've done your exploring, head to the few exhibits on display there. Enjoy the impressive cannons from medieval times, WW2 pill boxes there were hidden around the medieval castle and much more. Like jewellery, household items and weaponry depicting the castle's military occupation. There's also a fabulous trail for children to wander around the castle. Where they can explore its nooks and crannies, while on the hunt for hidden things.
Did you know the castle was manned by French Canadians during the planned German Invasion during the Second World War? Thankfully it never happened but Pevensey Castle is brimmed with so much British history and knowledge, enough for everyone to enjoy! Making it a brilliant visit for history buffs and inquisitive people all around.
