International Slavery Museum
Liverpool, MerseysideAbout International Slavery Museum
International Slavery Museum is an accessible and informative collection of displays aimed at older children and adults, spread over 3 main galleries on the following themes: Life in West Africa: exploring the story of Africa and its peoples, who are central to the story of transatlantic slavery Enslavement and the Middle Passage: revealing some of the brutality and trauma suffered by enslaved Africans on the voyage across the Atlantic; then the oppression of their lives on plantations in the Americas. Legacies of slavery: which details the continuing fight for freedom and equality; the contemporary impact of transatlantic slavery, such as racism and discrimination; and the achievements of the African Diaspora.
It is the only museum of its kind available in this country to look at aspects of historical and contemporary slavery as well as being an international hub for resources on human rights issues. It's a really significant visit for children and great for extra curricular education but obviously there are plenty of elements of the subject which kids could find upsetting or disturbing. So give the attendance of sensitive types some consideration before taking them along, or of course because it's free you can pop in yourself and check it out first for nothing!
