Cobbaton Combat Collection
Umberleigh, DevonAbout Cobbaton Combat Collection
Cobbaton Combat Collection is the largest private military collection in the South West, with more than 60 combat vehicles, plus a variety of weapons and equipment from around the world! All the exhibits are under cover, making it a great all weather attraction too.
Most of the collection is from the World War II, but there are also exhibits from other wars, from the Boer War to the Gulf War. There is so much to see, from military surplus tanks to home front ration books, gas masks, guns, artillery, helmets, grenades, uniforms, and loads more! The displays can be quite cluttered due to the sheer (and ever increasing!) number of items, and a simple lack of space, but this helps to create an atmosphere akin to that inside a crowded tank, for example.
The Home Front building has a number of rooms portraying different aspects of civilian life in wartime Britain, from a Red Cross nurse getting ready for casualties, to an ARP post with a large filtration unit that can be pedal powered if there is an electricity failure! A good opportunity to learn about the difficult times experienced by families during the war. It also provides an excellent contrast to how lucky we are today.
There is also a picnic area, free parking, and a shop full of military items. Dogs are welcome on site, as there is plenty of surrounding countryside for walks, but only guide dogs are permitted in the Collection's building.
