Blackwater Gymnastics Club
Maldon, EssexAbout Blackwater Gymnastics Club
Maldon Gymnastics Club is a fast-growing, community-focused gymnastics club dedicated to making physical activity accessible, inclusive, and enjoyable for people of all ages and abilities. Originally established just four years ago as Blackwater Gymnastics with only 7 gymnasts and one coach, the club has grown rapidly and now supports over 300 weekly participants with a team of 14 staff members.
Following our recent relocation to a larger 5,000 sq. ft. facility at Unit 12, Wycke Hill Business Park, Maldon, we are now able to expand our provision and create a safe, welcoming environment where children, young people, and adults can develop confidence, fitness, friendships, resilience, and life skills through sport and movement.
Our club offers a wide variety of sessions to suit all ages, abilities, and goals. These include preschool gymnastics, after-school recreational gymnastics, tumbling, DMT (Double Mini Trampoline), squad training, SEN-friendly gymnastics sessions, home education classes, adult gymnastics, holiday camps, workshops, and open play sessions. Whether your child wants to enjoy gymnastics for fun, build confidence, improve fitness, or progress competitively, we aim to provide a positive and supportive pathway for everyone.
We are particularly proud of our inclusive and community-based approach. Our sessions are designed to be welcoming and encouraging, with coaches adopting a caring and supportive teaching style that helps every child feel valued and comfortable. Parents are a huge part of our club community and are always welcomed into our viewing area, which offers seating, stable Wi-Fi, and a warm environment to relax while children train. We also have a spacious free car park directly outside the facility, making access easy and convenient for families.
Half of our coaching team has over 20 years of experience in British Gymnastics coaching and judging, bringing a huge depth of knowledge and expertise to the club. Despite previously operating from a very small scout hut with limited equipment, our gymnasts have achieved outstanding success at both local and national competitions. In our first year entering NGA UK competitions, 10 out of 11 gymnasts qualified for the National Finals after two qualifying rounds against clubs from across the country. One of our gymnasts was crowned NGA UK National Champion at Level 1, with several other gymnasts achieving podium finishes across multiple age groups and levels. We also regularly take part in local competitions and achieve excellent results with our recreational gymnasts, proving that gymnastics can be both enjoyable and rewarding at every level.
Our coaching structure ensures sessions are organised, progressive, and varied. Classes begin with a 10-minute warm-up followed by two apparatus rotations, before ending with a cool-down and stretching period. Every week, apparatus rotations change so gymnasts work across all four Olympic pieces within a two-week cycle. This approach keeps sessions engaging while ensuring balanced skill development.
The facility itself is fully equipped with a full sprung floor, vault, four bars plus side training stations, three high beams and one low beam, trampettes, conditioning areas, and a growing range of gymnastics equipment suitable for all levels. Safety and progression are at the centre of everything we do, and we continue to invest in improving our equipment and training environment.
We also actively support the wider community through discounted holiday activities, open sessions, and inclusive opportunities for children with additional needs. As a HAF (Holiday Activities and Food) provider, we offer free holiday camps for children receiving free school meals, including healthy hot meals for all attendees. We are also in the process of becoming a SEND Sensation (Essex Short Breaks) partner to further strengthen our SEN provision.
Above all, Maldon Gymnastics Club aims to be more than just a gymnastics centre. We are building a friendly, inclusive community hub where children and adults can stay active, gain confidence, make friendships, and feel part of something positive and supportive.
