Attraction Information
Athenry Castle
Athenry is one of the most notable medieval walled towns still surviving in Ireland, rather pleasing for family exploration while dreaming of knights and princesses! Why not bring a cape and foam sword along for pictures of the smalls?
The battlements are fascinating 13th century work with tall arrow slits in the merlons for defence and the oldest part of the castle is the hall-keep from 1250. There are fine carvings and structural additions to be spotted, overall giving an atmosphere worthy of the smalls' imaginations, though perhaps not for a full afternoon. Great for a couple of hours though!
There's also a 20 minute audio visual presentation which you can get in on to derive the most from your visit. There are also 45 minute long guided tours available on request, for even greater detail! These are ideal for those visiting for study reasons.
It's worth noting there are loos provided but no refreshment options. There's a garderobe too but that's not for you!
