Attraction Information

Athenry Heritage Centre is a great starting point for visitors of all ages to discover one of the best preserved medieval towns in Ireland.
The ‘Medieval Experience' is a unique way to learn about history, with armour, an interactive weaponry exhibition, a chance to try archery and to dress up in medieval costume! There is a large selection of costumes for all ages and sizes, which means everyone can join in. Other interactive exhibits include models of the medieval town, a replica street of medieval crafts, storyboards, and the torture dungeon! There is also toy castles to play with, and face painting for the youngest visitors.

Check online before you visit, as the centre holds a number of seasonal activities, including Walled Towns Day in August, spooktacular Halloween, plus a Christmas Winter Wonderland. There is also free information to download, such as a map of Athenry, a walking tour brochure, and an audio narrative for the walk, so you can be your own guide as you explore the town.

The centre is located in St Mary's church, which is wheelchair and pushchair accessible. Guided tours are available, as well as medieval birthday parties.

Old church, new fun 5 out of 5 stars

Was recommended to visit when in Portumna Workhouse and it was good advice. The kids loved it, especially the dressing up in costumes. Plenty to do in essentially a small building. Highly recommended.
