From climbing the towering spiral staircases to catch a glimpse of the breathtaking views, and discovering the infamous murder holes where soldiers dropped all kinds of terrible things down those holes onto their attackers to try and get rid of them. Then travel around the castle to try and spot medieval graffiti dotted around, before heading outside to find the fish that swim around the moat.Why don't you take a step back to relax and imagine arriving at the castle all those hundreds of years ago as you cross the moat... Immerse yourself in the olden days of knights and kings. Did you know it's the original moat?Can you find the ancient stone unicorn? Maybe the medieval bread oven? You can learn all about medieval life as you explore the Lord and Lady's apartments and discover where the servants slept on the stone floor. For those with curious minds, you can ask all sorts of questions, the volunteers are full of expansive information!Between them and the enduring quality of the ruins themselves, there's a pleasing historical atmosphere and families of all ages will enjoy exploring.
Castle Grounds
The grounds surrounding the castle are a great place to spend a lazy summer afternoon. Pack up a picnic and bring a rug to sit on and enjoy the view!You can also discover the pillbox from WWII that was used as a defence to slow down the advancing armies! For those who love animals, you can spot all sorts of wildlife here! From carp and eels in the moat to stag beetles, red-tailed blood bees and even tawny owls!
Food & DrinkFancy a bite to eat? Head to the Wharf tea room for a spot of tea, fresh coffee or a light lunch. Not forgetting the delectable homemade cakes! The Castle View cafe also serves an array of sandwiches, scones and hot or cold refreshments. On sunny days why not bring a picnic? There's plenty of space and benches to relax on!

There are accessible parking spaces in the main car park, near the tea room and shop.An accessible toilet is found by the main car park next to the tea room.Level access to the Wharf Tea Room via the gravel car park and paved area.Buggy service between visitor reception and the castle when volunteers are available. We advise phoning ahead to avoid disappointment.Accessibility Gravel paths throughout the site with some slopes and undulating terrain. Level access to the castle courtyard only.
