Rare Breeds Centre
Ashford, KentAbout Rare Breeds Centre
It’s all about the animals at the Rare Breeds Centre, where you will get the chance to meet cows, horses, rabbits, goats, sheep and all of our rare breeds of farm animals.
Set in 100 acres of stunning grounds in the Kent countryside, you can easily spend a day here enjoying all the attractions. Start your adventure in our animal barn where you can meet and stroke the animals. Explore our animal displays, stables, aviary and new goat paddock as well as our ferret enclosure where you can meet Al and Beano.
Join us for our famous pig racing which runs from April – October, with the chance for children to take part. Don’t forget to pick your favourite before they set off!
Our Butterfly Tunnel should be next on your adventure, we have a variety of native and tropical butterflies in the tunnel, featuring species from South America, Africa, the Indian subcontinent, the Philippines and Australasia. Our Discovery Garden is right around the corner, where you will find seasonal fruit and veg growing - you might even see a ripe strawberry ready to be eaten before the birds do.
Our tractor ride, which runs daily now includes an accessible trailer so that everyone can take part in the fun. Ride up to the top of the farm passing sheep and meadows to our beautiful woodlands which features carpets of bluebells in spring. We encourage people to explore our three woodland walks, all varying in length. Just follow the signposts to make your way around.
Our tractor ride will also take you past our multiple playparks, including the Mysterious Marsh where everyone can practice their balancing, swinging and climbing skills, whilst avoiding the marsh trolls. Our hill fort offers a zipwire, giant tube maze, wooden hill fort and outdoor assault course, ready for hours of fun! Sammy's Playpen is our final outdoor playground, while our soft play area is a popular indoor playground for our youngest visitors.
Youngsters also enjoy our tractor village where little farmers can zoom around on a variety of ride-on tractors. Storytelling Wednesdays are also a big hit along with our new Sing and Sign sessions on Fridays in the Discovery Zone.
When you are feeling peckish, our Granary Restaurant located at the farm entrance serves a variety of freshly cooked food with locally sourced ingredients (vegan, vegetarian and gluten-free options available too). Be sure to sample our gourmet coffees and hot chocolates, with milk alternatives, a selection of ice creams and sometimes even yummy cakes, made by our Life Skills students.
Creative and entertaining events are offered during the holidays, with our funny and talented entertainers causing wonder and giggles over Easter, Halloween, and Christmas. There are also seasonal activities and features including lambing in the spring and special events for the summer holidays.
The best part? With every visit to The Rare Breeds Centre, you are also supporting our charity, Canterbury Oast Trust, which supports adults with learning disabilities and autism to achieve their aspirations for how they wish to live, learn and work.
We are open all year with something for everyone in the family providing more than a day’s worth of fun and activity!
We're a charity supporting adults with learning disabilities and autism
The Rare Breeds Centre is not only an amazing farm attraction that provides endless fun to outdoor enthusiasts, it is also part of the life skills programmes for Canterbury Oast Trust (COT), a charity supporting adults with learning disabilties and autism. Our students learn animal husbandry, customer service, horticultural and culinary skills on the farm. Visitors help to enrich the lives of our supported people learning on the farm as well as financially contribute to the charity's accommodation, care, and training services.
Visitors get the chance to meet and interact with residential and day students learning on the farm who are happy to share their knowledge and enthusiasm. Art created by our talented art students from Art at the Farm is also on sale in the gift shop, while plants propagated and nurtured by our horticultural students in our Plants and Produce team are also available for purchase.
We raise and protect rare breeds of farm animals
The Rare Breeds Centre is registered with the Rare Breeds Survival Trust and is the only place in Kent where you can see a wide variety of rare breed farm animals. We have 6 rare breeds of pigs, 6 rare breeds of sheep, 2 horse rare breeds, 4 chicken rare breeds, 2 rare breeds of goats, 2 rare breeds of geese, 3 of turkeys and even one rare breed aviary bird - the java sparrow. You can learn more about these fascinating breeds on the farm and from our website.
We have volunteering opportunities
As a charity that supports adults with learning disabilities and autism, we have a team of dedicated volunteers who help with everything from life skills training to repairing fencing. But we always have more volunteering opportunities on the farm and within our accommodation services for repairs and improvements, greeters, event parking and more! Corporations looking to fulfill their community involvement and volunteering goals find us a fun and rewarding location to volunteer where the work contributed is very much appreciated!
