Whatton House
Loughborough, LeicestershireAbout Whatton House
Do you love exploring the countryside, and visiting buildings that are ornate and incredibly built? Add Whatton House to your list of family days out!
Whatton House
The house was originally built in 1802 for Edward Dawson, in an English country garden in the heart of Leicestershire. Although, after a devastating fire and reconstruction of the house, it is now private to the family of the Crawshaws and not open to the public. However, the gardens are available to explore and are a sight to see! The beautiful garden was built in the late 19th century by the wife of the first Lord Crawshaw. She designed 15 acres of mixed woodland, garden areas and trails leading through shaded trees and a shaded location.
The Gardens
The gardens are quaint and offer a place of tranquillity, within their peaceful surroundings. All throughout the year. These paths not only lead you through the woodland garden but through ornamental trees, surrounded by gorgeous wildflowers, bulbs, flowering shrubs and spacious, lush lawns. During the summer, you'll be treated to stunning views of Charnwood Forest, sheltered by a high brick wall of a working kitchen garden that offers a profusion of colour. And as autumn blows in, the leaves on the 200-year-old, mature trees change colour and take your breath away.
Not only are there beautiful gardens, but if you explore enough you'll find the Bogey Hole. A former icehouse that has been converted into a grotto with rockery features that date back to 1831! It's situated to the east of the Chinese Garden, which has terracotta warriors standing proud. They were discovered in China after being buried for an impressive 2200 years! So, you know this is absolutely worth visiting itself. As well as an arboretum, ornamental ponds and a decorative loggia, there's plenty more to see.
And when you're feeling peckish, head over to The Courtyard for some grub. And picnics can be provided but must be pre-ordered beforehand.
