Things to see and do at Bradgate Park
Landscape & Environment
Bradgate Park is picture-perfect, with its lush mix of woodland and bracken-covered slopes. All peppered with rocky outcrops, which contain some of the oldest rocks in England! The landscape is also quite rugged and wild, making it the perfect place to escape from everyday life. You can really see the beauty of nearly untouched nature.
River and Ancient Trees
The River Lin, the shortest river in Leicester, runs through the lower park flowing into Cropston Reservoir. It's a great spot to stop for a picnic and try to spy some of the local deer. This amazing park is rich in wildlife and the kids can even have a splash about in the shallow waters. Just don’t miss the ancient rock formations and gnarled, 500-year-old oak trees. Can you believe some of the trees have stood there over 500 years old? Just fascinating!
Guided Walks and Deer
Explore the deepest nooks and crannies of this 336 hectare deer park by downloading a free self-guided Story Walk. You can learn all about the herds of deer including Red and Fallow deer that reside here. They have an impressive herd size of around 550 animals! Bradgate Park is the only remaining enclosed medieval deer park in the East Midlands. The walks help visitors understand more about them. With information that is also available in handy leaflet forms, packed with scientific facts, a hand-drawn map and directions to lead your little adventurers along the way.
Bradgate House
Explore the ruins of Bradgate House too, one of the earliest country houses to ever be built in England. This historic house was built by Thomas Grey and is the childhood home of Lady Jane Grey who was Queen of England for just 9 days! It's also one of Leicester's famous landmarks, so it's a definite must-see! And if you don't fancy walking along hills and rugged landscapes, wander in the lower part of the park where you'll find the visitor centre and the Deer Barn. As well as the cafe for some much-needed energy supply. This beautiful park has much to offer, making it a great family day out!
Visitor Centre
At the visitor centre is free to visit and here you can find out more about the history and wildlife of Bradgate Park. There are interactive displays, information boards, and friendly staff happy to answer any questions you may have. You can also pick up a souvenir from the gift shop to remember your visit by and find out more about off-road scooter hire.
Events & Activities
Bradgate Park also hosts a range of events and activities throughout the year. These include the Bradgate Park Wellbeing Walks. Ask at the visitor centre for information on events happening during your visit.
