About The Singing Ringing Tree
The Singing Ringing Tree is a remarkable sculpture located in an idyllic country town of Lancashire. Standing atop a hill in the picturesque Pennine countryside, this unique piece of art combines the beauty of nature with the power of sound.
With its striking appearance and mesmerizing auditory experience, the Singing Ringing Tree has become an iconic landmark, attracting visitors from around the world.
About the attraction
The Singing Ringing Tree was created as part of the "Panopticons" project, aimed at creating a series of eye-catching sculptures across Lancashire. Designed by architects Mike Tonkin and Anna Liu, the sculpture was unveiled in 2006 and has since become one of the most renowned attractions in the region.
The musical sculpture is made of stacked, galvanised steel pipes of varying lengths and angles, resembling the shape of a twisted metal tree. Its towering presence and metallic structure create a striking contrast against the surrounding greenery! It stands at approximately 3 metres tall and is positioned to face the prevailing wind direction!
What truly sets the Singing Ringing Tree apart is its ability to produce eerie sounds. An otherworldly melody when the constant wind blows through its pipes... As a gust of wind passes through the sculpture, the pipes begin to vibrate, producing a range of sounds that can be heard from a distance. The more wind - the better the melody! It's essentially a wind harp and a unique sculpture to visit! The melodic notes change with the intensity and direction of the wind, creating an ever-changing musical experience. Pretty neat right?
The Singing Ringing Tree not only provides an auditory experience but also offers stunning panoramic views of the surrounding landscape. Visitors can gaze out over the rolling hills, forests, and farmland of Lancashire. With numerous fantastic walks to take the family on, make the singing tree your goal point before heading back down! Did you know that this peculiar structure has become an important symbol of Lancashire's commitment to art, culture, and sustainability? Having been designed to be environmentally friendly, using locally sourced materials and its ability to harness the power of the wind to produce sound.
Over the years, the Singing Ringing Tree has become a popular destination for visitors of all ages. It has become a place of contemplation, relaxation, and wonder. Whether it is the soothing sound of the wind through the hollow steel pipes or the stunning views it offers.
